I need help recovering data on a hard drive please!

Hi! I have a Seagate 1.5 tb external usb 2.0 hard drive. The drive started making a clicking noise and I went and purchased a new drive, but when I went to transfer my data off of it and onto the new drive, my Windows 7 HP laptop (HP Pavilion DV6500US upgraded from Vista to 7) prompted me to format the drive before I could access the old hard drive. I have purchased Norton Ghost and Avanquest Disk Utilities Professional. I have not run either as of yet. I have downloaded from Seagate their diagnostic tool. It passed all of the tests that tool conducted except the smart test, which the tool said was unavailable. Any thoughts on how to recover my data without formatting my hd?

And always and I mean always copy a bum drive so you don't operate or test on the last drive that you have with the files you can't lose.

PS. Be sure to try said drive inside a new enclosure.

Sometimes it's the little board or power supply in the old enclosure.

What I think of this kind a business is RIPOFF. None of them work like Recuva Professional, Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery and etc... I can't remember anymore some software I bought. I bought 4 software recovery file... none of them work.!!!
