Enclosure Kit malfunction

After a Windows Update occurred recently, my enclosure kit with a Western Digital IDE hard drive installed in it malfunctioned. My operating system is a 64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium Edition. The Update did something to the computer or enclosure kit to where I had to unplug the enclosure before the computer would start up. Before I realized that it had something to do with the enclosure kit, I had to do a hard shutdown because it stayed suspended in the start up mode and I think that really messed it up even more. Now when I plug the kit back up, it freezes the computer. I bought a new enclosure kit and it doesn't freeze up but it continues to tell me that I have to format my hard drive that's in it. I have so much on that hard drive that I really don't want to loose and need to know if there is a way to rescue the data.
