PRESARIO C300/C310E AUDIO DRIVER RE-INSTALLATION HELP NEEDED

Can anyone please help. I have a Presario C300 Compaq laptop. It has a sticker on it saying it is a C310E. I re-installed Windows XP onto it from scratch. I have been onto the Compaq site and tried every driver they have for the audio to work on the system. But none work. I have done as Compaq requested and loaded the generic microsoft driver first, still no luck. Does anyone know what i am missing or failing to do?

Download/install Everest (freeware) and look under Multimedia...see what audio controller your laptop has. Then go to the respective manufacturer's website (Realtek, Sigma Tel, etc.) and search the downloads section for a corresponding driver. Aside from that, try connecting a set of headphones or external speakers and see if the built-in speakers have failed.
