I'm having the same difficulties. I kept getting messages about missing Active X components, I've uninstalled, and reinstalled countless times. I have spent hours and hours on this problem. I've been in daily contact with McAfee tech support, I've been places inside my computer that no one with my lack of computer expertise should be, to no avail. I've asked every tech person I've dealt with if there have been others with this problem, but they never give me a straight answer. I've had it! I'm very frustrated, and like you,am running my computer without virus protection. I wish someone could offer a solution. I've got 18 months left on my McAfee subscription, but I'm about ready to trash it and find something else.

Hi, dmichels. I had some success today--I chatted with a Dell service rep, who told me to lower the firewall settings. I'm testing this out--so far I enabled firewall (lowered it a notch to standard) and I enabled virus scan. I got back on the internet... Yea!...even after restarting, which is a miracle, considering how things have been for the past two weeks. I'm not totally convinced that the problem is fixed, This seems WAY too easy! The best part about the chat with the Dell rep is that I feel assured that my system is okay. With everything that the McAfee techs had me doing, I was more than alittle worried. Question--at your last reinstall, did McAfee have you do all kinds of things to your computer to make sure the program was totally off the system? A tech person I know says that McAfee is notoriously hard to remove, and that little hidden parts can mess up your reinstall. If you're interested, a McAfee/Internet Explorer search on the Dell Support Website's "Consumer Forum" brought up loads of comments from very frustrated people with McAfee/Internet Explorer problems.

I decided to give McAfee tech support another try this morning (one LAST try!). When I went to the help website, lo and behold, I found another area of support I hadn't seen before, as it was off the edge of my screen. It's called "Partners". I clicked on Dell, I have now collected 40 pages of info about solving McAfee/internet problems that have to do specifically with software on my computer. I'm hopeful there will be something there to get this all straightened out. I saw alot of the words "configurations" and "settings", which makes me feel encouraged. Here's how I got there: I right clicked on my McAfee icon, clicked on Customer Support, then clicked "continue". On the next screen, way over on the right, is a column labeled "Partners". I clicked on Dell and was rewarded with this wealth of information. Now, if it just has the information I need, I will be ecstatic. I'll let you know...ced

I JUST uninstalled too--I've had it! I agree with you--I wouldn't be surprised if something comes out about this issue. By the way, the 40 pp of configuration notes didn't make a bit of difference, so don't bother. I'm going to check out AVG. Thanks for the link. My brother-in-law suggested Norton, which he runs on his company's computers. They're offering a back to school special which looks pretty reasonable: $39.00, if I'm reading it correctly. They also offer a 15 day trial download. I have Verizon DSL, and they offer a package too, @ $5/mo. I'm a preschool teacher, and school starts next week, so I don't have any more time to waste following up on the McAfee issue. Time to move on! Good luck! ~ced

How did Dell come to the conclusion that you needed to reinstall Windows XP? Did they run a system check or something like that? Maybe I had better do that too. The Dell tech person I chatted with online with felt my system was okay because I can use Internet Explorer just fine without McAfee, but she didn't run any tests. Now I'm concerned. I was planning on downloading the Norton free trial this morning.

Ced, I hope you read this. I finally fixed the problem, and since you have a Dell,too, it would work for you. Basically, I had to back up my personal files, then restore the computer to the way it was when I bought it -- that meant tapping into a Ghost program in the machine that resets Windows XP (and everything the computer came with.) Then I reconnected my ISP, downloaded the latest Windows Updates, then updated my ISP version of Internet Explorer. When all that was done, I went to the McAfee page, logged in and downloaded my subscribed version. Once that was done, i put my various software programs (like Word) back on, and put my personal files back. Now it works fine! Even McAfee. My guess is that the machine shut down during a McAfee download and corrupted XP. So,the only solution became starting from scratch. It was some work, but worth it. Wish I had done it from the beginning and saved all that time...

ced721 and waseemchandia, I see that you two went back on forth on this issue quite a bit, and it was two and a half years ago, but I had one question. Was the only thing that worked restoring your computer (waseemchandia)? That is definitely not an option for me as the servers that the McAfee software resides on are live production servers. The error I am getting is an Internet Explorer Script Error and the URL it gives is http://vs.mcafeeasap.com/MC/ENU/VS47/Agent/myCioMain.asp?Mode=Update&CompanyKey=*****. The McAfee agents were of very little help as you stated and told me to contact Microsoft Techincal Support! The representative said that there was nothing they could do since it is an error in the Internet Explorer update. If you have ANY information that could help me, that would be great! Thanks!!!

So I never before had a issue with McAfee until I got my new computer running Windows 7. I use to recommend McAfee to everyone, but now I can't do that due to the issue's I'm having. When McAfee's does the scan it will not allow me to access my IE at all, it will freeze it up. This issue really just started recently within the last few months, it didn't happen when I first got the computer. I am seriously thinking that it's a IE issue, I have downloaded Chrome and haven't had an issue since. Anyone with any ideas of what could be the issue? Even though I'm using Chrome now, I do like IE because that is what I know. HELP?!?!?!

I started having problems with McAfee almost two months after I installed explorer 9. I tried uninstalling McAfee several times and reinstalling with no luck. After several layers of McAfee tech support I finally was told to uninstall the update that changed explorer to version 9. This brought explorer 8 back and solved the problem. I am using a Dell computer using windows 7 pro. I sure do miss explorer 9 but at least my computer is working again.

but the initial post in this discussion, the post you are replying to, was made in 2006.

I doubt they are still having the same problems, and in fact, neither IE9 nor IE8 were in existence then.
