Multiboot PC with Windows XP on a USB Hard Disk

I have a PC with a Cyrix 800 MHz CPU and Windows ME operating system. Call me ''ancient'', but I upgrade my PC hardware and its OS only when I feel the need for it and not because Intel or Microsoft have introduced a new CPU or OS.
I have found some interesting free software which I would like to install on my PC. The problem is that it requires Windows XP and according to its developers it will not run under Windows ME. I am dreading the prospect of upgrading from Windows ME to Windows XP as I would have to re-install all my application software from scratch. Since, I need Windows XP for just one or two applications, I would like to know if I can install Windows XP on a USB hard disk without messing up with my Windows ME and the application softawre already installed on my IDE hard disk. In short, can I have a multiboot PC with Windows ME on my main hard disk and Windows XP on a removable hard disk?
Thanks in advance for any help.
