CNET Prizefight: Apple iPhone vs. LG Voyager

by jajjr - 12/6/07 2:23 PM In reply to: CNET Prizefight: Apple iPhone vs. LG Voyager by KentGerman CNET staff

I don't know if I can put to much into this as you call it prize fight when CNET tells us that Cell phones aren't worth much if they don't make good calls. And though both handsets run on the same carrier, Don't you guys know the difference between GSM & CDMA.

You suck.

by matrix2004 - 12/6/07 6:28 PM In reply to: CNET Prizefight: Apple iPhone vs. LG Voyager by jajjr

Both phones do not run on the same carrier. What are you talking about?. What good is a phone if it doesn't have good call quality? I do think its unfair to the Iphone to compare the call quality since CDMA is superior to GSM. The Voyager is better, no doubt.

CDMA vs. GSM

by jgvillan - 12/7/07 12:23 PM In reply to: You suck. by matrix2004

If CDMA is supirior to GSM as you say, then why is GSM more accepted around the world, compared to GSM? When one travels, one has more service through GSM compared to CDMA, also given that unlocked phones (at least until Sprint changes it's policy) are only on the GSM netowrk.

CDMA

by jaydanie - 12/15/07 10:13 AM In reply to: CDMA vs. GSM by jgvillan

the CDMA cellphone network can better penetrate walls than other networks. that's what makes it better.

two cdma networks are verizon and alltel with alltel having superior coverage in many areas and verizon having a broader phone selection.

however, alltel has fewer phones, but excellent coverage and i have never had a dropped call. none of my verizon friends can make that statement. also, the voice/call quality on any of alltel's phones are superior to any of the others i have used.

A GSM network is cheaper to build then a CDMA network, hence the reason GSM networks are more prevalent. It has nothing to do with why one network is better then the other. CDMA networks are much more "powerful" and therefore are more expensive.

Eh, given the choice...

by jgvillan - 12/6/07 3:37 PM In reply to: CNET Prizefight: Apple iPhone vs. LG Voyager by KentGerman CNET staff

Setting the Prize Fight aside, if I had to choose between iPhone or the Voyager, I would go with the Voyager. To say nothing about iPhone's lack of 3G, to me, it just comes down to the fact that the Voyager has a physical QWERTY keybaord. I handled the iPhone, it just wasn't for me with it's 99% on screen controls. I simply can't type on the iPhone, not do I feel comfortable in doing so.

Matter of preference

by fhinner - 12/7/07 2:28 PM In reply to: Eh, given the choice... by jgvillan

OK, I came from a hardcore HP 69xx and Blackberry background. After leaving a job and taking my number back I decided that AT&T charges me 39.99 for unlimited data for my windows device, while I get it for 20 on the iPhone.

So after all the rumors and stuff, I decided to get me one (to see what the hype is all about). One of the reviewers is not a big drawback for the Voyager, I would contest (having one and a Blackjack for work) aaahhhhaaaa it is. One of my favorite features is that wireless support and the ability to turn it on after asking the question. The browsing capabilities of the iPhone are unmatched and the e-mail client is way above the other.

The keyboard takes some getting used to, but I have to admit it is for sure the best phone keyboard to be operated with one hand (yeah getting of the plane aso, it beats anything I have had before). Don't get me wrong the Voyager is a very nice phone and the device voice quality is a tad better then the iPhone, but I also have to say after owning one of each if I pay for it, it will be the iPhone everytime.

iphone still on top

by jackwise11 - 12/6/07 5:17 PM In reply to: CNET Prizefight: Apple iPhone vs. LG Voyager by KentGerman CNET staff

The iphones touch screen interface is innovative and very responsive compared to the voyager's. Also the 4gb or 8gb built in memory really adds to the phone's multimedia abilities (have to buy microsd card for voyager. Even though voyager uses a 3g network and has stereo bluetooth built in, both technologies are going to be alot more useful in the future (iphone will have caught up with that in the future). Not many descent bluetooth headphones exist or bluetooth speakers. As for messaging, being a cell phone salesperson, not many people actually use mms messaging as people actually think.

LOL, no MMS?

by norbdad - 12/7/07 7:49 AM In reply to: iphone still on top by jackwise11

Jackwise, that's pretty funny and you already give yourself away by saying handset salesperson. Trust me, your carrier may not be doing a lot of MMS messaging, but I've seen the numbers for a few of the top carriers. Trust me, there's a lot more than YOU think. As the need for MMS grows, the more likely people are going to choose handsets that are capable of sending multimedia and the iPhone severely lacks in functionality that has anything to do with a true wireless phone. Basically it's an iPod with a small amount of phone guts, just enough for it to not be simply a dead stick.

Hellow what you mean no mms

by motoxer0017 - 12/9/07 2:40 PM In reply to: LOL, no MMS? by norbdad

Come on you guys so what if it dont have mms. IT HAS EMAIL. FYI you can email someones phone a picture, WITH UR IPHONE. Just email the picture to their number@ whatever their service's mms email is.com. For example to send a picture to a cingular customer it is theirnumber@mms.att.com or for verizon its theirnumber@vzxpix.com. So you can use "mms" its just email.

Email vs MMS

by SamNK - 12/10/07 12:07 PM In reply to: Hellow what you mean no mms by motoxer0017

Motoxer, you make it sound like sending an email is just as easy as sending a MMS. I certainly don't know or remember the mobile service provider for each one of my friends so it's a lot easier to send an MMS to their mobile number than an email. I consider it a joke that the $400 iPhone can't do MMS when the majority of other camera phones can do it, including the really cheap ones that you can get for free when you sign up for service.

You only need to remember the mms gateway once

by nextcube - 12/10/07 12:17 PM In reply to: Email vs MMS by SamNK

When you're viewing photos in the iPhone's photo gallery, there's a button on-screen to send the photo as an e-mail. All you need to do is program in the person's phone number + mms gateway for the provider as one of the person's e-mail addresses (the iPhone allows you to store many e-mail addresses and phone numbers per person) and select from the list. No more difficult than selecting a person's phone number from a list.

Regardless, MMS should be supported on the iPhone

by SamNK - 12/10/07 12:41 PM In reply to: You only need to remember the mms gateway once by nextcube

You're right about only needing to know the mms gateway once for each carrier but you need to know the carrier of each of your contacts in order to know which mms gateway to use. Regardless, my point is that the $400 (formerly $600) iPhone should support MMS and you shouldn't have to use alternatives like email.

Btw, have you ever tried asking the "average" person for the mms gateway of their carrier? They won't even know what you're talking about.

It should be supported

by motoxer0017 - 12/10/07 5:53 PM In reply to: Regardless, MMS should be supported on the iPhone by SamNK

Yes you would think apple would include it but honestly if it only takes a quick internet search to find all your friends carriers gateways and then a good 5 minutes to add them to your contacts then is it honestly a problem. Besides once 3rd party apps officially come out I am almost certain an MMS app will be created. There is already one for jailbroken iphones as well as plenty of other apps that honestly make the iphone worth the money. Once apple supports third party software, the people who arent willing to void their warranty right now will be able to and it will definitely be hard to compare the iphone with other phones. Especially considering the fact that so many people use the iphone, there will be more developers out there that will make cool stuff for it.
