Microsoft UAC keeps asking about Adobe Flash Player

by Harv - 11/15/09 12:34 PM

Installer. Since I logged into this Forum today, User Account Control keeps popping up with this message: Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer? And the program in question is Adobe Flash Player Installer. I answer "No" every time. Why is UAC asking about this particular program on this website? The same request happens on other sites too. How do I get the requests to stop?

User Account Control

When you answer 'no' then changes you are attempting to make
are blocked.

Not sure you really want to stop the permission requests.

Here's one place to read about role of UAC.

Harv, Have You Adjusted The Flash Player Settings?

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 11/15/09 6:53 PM In reply to: Microsoft UAC keeps asking about Adobe Flash Player by Harv

Click on the link below to the "Flash Player Settings Manager", then select the "Global Notifications Settings Panel", then UNCHECK the box that says: "Notify me when an update to Adobe Flash Player is available". There are other settings which you might want to change as well in the other "Global" settings screens.

http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager05.html

Although it appears as though you're changing these settings on a website, it's actually adjusting the settings ON your computer's flash player.. The change mentioned should stop Flash Player from trying to updated itself.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip, Grif.

The constant UAC popup regarding the Adobe Flash Player Installer was driving me crazy, because I had to stop what I was doing to respond in order to proceed.

Flash updates

by davidwholt - 11/16/09 5:49 AM In reply to: Harv, Have You Adjusted The Flash Player Settings? by Grif Thomas Moderator

Good advice, Grif, to accomplish stopping the annoying update messages.

Just want to bring up the reported risks of using Flash,
that if valid would leave one increasingly vulnerable
by avoiding updates that try to combat the problem.

David, I Didn't Say Not To Update

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 11/17/09 7:15 PM In reply to: Flash updates by davidwholt

I update Flash every time a new version is released.. I simply disable the updated Nags that are released.. One simply needs to stay diligent by watching this forum's update thread to see when a new version comes out.

Hope this helps.

UAC still asking for permission after option change.

by Harv - 11/16/09 6:40 PM In reply to: Harv, Have You Adjusted The Flash Player Settings? by Grif Thomas Moderator

Grif, I unchecked "Notify me when an update to Adobe Flash Player is available" and I'm still getting the popup. In fact, I get more UAC popups regarding Adobe Flash Player Installer on the CNET Forum than at any other website. Why would UAC be asking about Adobe Flash Player Installer on the pages of this Forum? I even get a UAC popup when I click on Preview Post.

Just my 2 cents here Harv

by roddy32 Moderator - 11/16/09 7:28 PM In reply to: UAC still asking for permission after option change. by Harv

The ad that I see the most on this website recently is the big red Trend Micro one. This is a flash ad. If you see that, right click on it and then left click where it says "about flash player". A new tab should open up and after a seconds it should tell you which version you have. That will be on the right hand side of that page.

This is what is tells me if I do that.

"You have version 10,0,32,18 installed"

That is the latest version, if you have an earlier one, that would probably be why you are getting that message. If that is the case, just update to the latest version and it should fix the problem.

roddy, I just checked and I have the latest version.

by Harv - 11/17/09 4:56 PM In reply to: Just my 2 cents here Harv by roddy32 Moderator

So, something else must be triggering the popups regarding Adobe Flash Player Installer. When I booted up my pc this morning, UAC was issuing popups like crazy, not just on this Forum but any web page I happened to open up. I can't use Firefox exclusively because I have a 64-bit beta version named Minefield installed, which is not compatible with Roboform, a password manager. Roboform is compatible with IE though. Frankly, I hate IE no matter what the version, including Windows Live Mail.

previous version removal?

by davidwholt - 11/17/09 7:11 PM In reply to: roddy, I just checked and I have the latest version. by Harv

I remember having trouble with Secunia Personal Software Inspector referring to unpatched previous version after I installed current one.

See if this helps:

How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX control

Due to recent enhancements to the Adobe Flash Player installers, you can now remove the player only by using the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller. To remove Flash Player, simply download and run the appropriate uninstaller for your system using the steps below...

Harv.. until Grif returns.. Flash Player Settings

by Carol~ Moderator - 11/16/09 7:51 PM In reply to: UAC still asking for permission after option change. by Harv

Harv..

I'm not saying this will change things. It's the settings Grif recommended you also change. I included this site (only) to show you how to do it, if you have problem with it. Donna recommended these settings some years back and I doubt they have changed. Sorry, I'm unable to access the link where she posted it, but these are the same settings.

Global Privacy Settings Panel:
Go to http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager02.html#118539

**Always deny and Always ask

Global Storage Settings Panel:
Go to http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager03.html

**Move the slider to None. (All the way to the far left)
**Uncheck "Allow 3rd party flash content to store data on your computer"

Global Security Settings Panel:
Go to http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager04.html

**Put a tick mark next to "Always Deny"

Global Notification Settings Panel:
Go to http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager05.html

**Uncheck "Notify me when an update is available to Adobe Flash Player is available".

Website Privacy Settings Panel:
Go to http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager06.html

**Put a tick mark next to "Always deny"

Website Storage Settings Panel:
Go to http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager07.html

**Move the slider to "None" (All the way to the far left)

Best of luck..

Website Privacy Settings Panel: Always Deny

by Harv - 11/17/09 4:36 PM In reply to: Harv.. until Grif returns.. Flash Player Settings by Carol~ Moderator

Carol, I put a tick mark next to Always Deny, but when I returned to check it was still there, the mark was gone. So, I decided to delete all the Visited Site entries and tried to tick mark Always Deny again. This time, I was unable to choose any of the options. I just went back to try again and got the same result. This is the only catagory that I was unable to change. Very strange.

Privacy Settings and Then Some..

by Carol~ Moderator - 11/17/09 6:49 PM In reply to: Website Privacy Settings Panel: Always Deny by Harv

Harv..

Do you see where it shows a "visited websites" type link, just under "always deny"? You need to click on it first. It should put the tick mark in "always deny". You many need to play around with it, but it will work.

As far as what's been going on with the UAC... I read something the other day, but I didn't know if it was specific to your problem. Vista: Getting Adobe Flash Player to Work. If you do find the "scenario" discussed is applicable, and wish to try it, the FlashUtil9b file should (now) be FlashUtil10c. The "9b" reflects an older version, as opposed to the more recent "10c".

What is the the FlashUtil10c.exe? From here: FlashUtil.exe includes functionality required by Windows Vista and by the autoupdate notification process. When double clicked it will check to see if you need any updates and the program is installed properly.

The only reason I questioned it, was because it didn't specifically say anything about the UAC. You may want to read it, to see if it "fits the bill".

You can also do a "search" (top right) at Adobe's Flash Player Forum, if you don't have any luck here. There's a great deal of information there, about Vista and Flash Player.

Best of luck..
Carol

Harv, The Adobe Forums Have A Fix..

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 11/17/09 7:24 PM In reply to: Website Privacy Settings Panel: Always Deny by Harv

Somewhat mentioned by David above, it takes a complete uninstall, then reinstall using the uninstaller and Flash installer, each time selecting to "run as administrator" before running.. Here's the link:

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/423648?tstart=1

And here are links to the uninstaller and the ActiveX installer for Flash:

Uninstall your current Flash from Add/Remove Programs AND, if you have it, uninstall the Adobe Shockwave Player from there as well, then download the full Flash uninstaller from the link below:

First, uninstall Flash by using the Flash Uninstaller at the link below. Download the file to your desktop, then RIGHT click on the file, select "run as administraor".

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157

After that's done, then download the manual Flash player installer from the link below.. Download it to your desktop and "Run as administrator" to install the newest Flash for Internet Explorer.

http://www.softwarepatch.com/internet/flash.html

Once that's done, if you're also using Firefox, visit the site below while in Firefox, then download and run the Flash plugin installer

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&%3BLang=French&%3BP5_Language=French

Then download and install the manual Shockwave installer from the link below, IF YOU HAD IT BEFORE AND WANT IT AGAIN.. As above, be sure to uninstall the previous version of Shockwave using the Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs section.

http://www.softwarepatch.com/internet/shockwave.html

Hope this helps.
