Interesting eh ?

by David Nevill - 1/18/05 1:48 PM

As an experiment, I blocked "third party cookies" from being automatically downloaded onto my system ( cookies from Websites that are installed by third party companies, not the actual Website's ) and instructed Int. Explorer to ask me whether I want them to be blocked or not ..

On accessing my MSN Hotmail page .. as well as Avenue A ( blocked by Spybot ) it tried to download a cookie from "reporting.tvlicensing.co.uk" !!

It would be very interesting to know exactly why they have this tie-up with M/Soft in the UK !!

See : http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/privacypolicy/#link8

On these CNet pages a com.com cookie tries to get onto my system .. but you probably all know that anyway ;)

Cheers

Nev

third party cookies

I tried to set mine to block without prompt and had all kinds of problems(everything microsoft would tell me my settings were wrong and I couldn't go there unless I accepted cookies....always trust microsoft???). so I had to put in the prompt. sometimes it takes clicking block 2 or 3 times to get it to go away, then I get a new prompt when I click on anything to change pages and have to go through the same process. very annoying. I would just let them all go in and delete all cookies when I get off the net but then I would lose all the good cookies too.

Download Internet Sweeper (I have had it running for years) you can control which cookies you keep and which you wish to delete. Find it at:

uk tvlicensing cookie

by tim5165 - 2/22/05 5:39 PM In reply to: Interesting eh ? by David Nevill

This cookie appeared in my list; dunno whence it came, but it lasts until the year 2035. In UK, we have to pay a simple tax ($200 /year)to watch TV, this is to fund the BBC (ie Public Broadcasting). People occasionally get sent to jail for not having a license! So my guess is that it is to spy on people trying to buy a)computers with TV access b) eBay users looking for used TVs.?? It possibly came on the apple mac site. This is a British Government cookie. Creepy. We have a license.

I am surprised that you are still using Internet Explorer AND not blocking ALL third-party Cookies. (And probability are not using HOSTS file: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
