XP Pro vs. Media Center

by beswede - 2/7/05 2:48 PM

I'm computer shopping for the first time in several years and need a bit of help catching up. Can someone tell me what the significant differences are between XP Pro and XP Media Center Edition? MS has a comparison chart for Pro vs. Home Edition, but I can't find a similar one for Media Center. Someone told me Media Center is basically Pro with additions, but I haven't been able to find any verification of that.

Thanks for the help.

XP Pro vs. Media Center

I found a comparison chart at http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/editions/xp-pro/media.mspx

It does not seem very comprehensive, especially when compared to the chart MS has for Pro vs. Home, but it does give some help.

As far as Media Center having more features than Pro, what's puzzling is that I just ordered a new PC from HP, and it was $14 cheaper to get Media Center instead of Pro. I decided to go with the Pro edition, since I knew what I'd be getting. I know that MS is trying to break into the Home Entertainment market, though I'd a bit concerned that the Media Center version might turn out to be another orphaned product, ala Windows ME. (just my $0.02).

hi. who ever told you that media center is pro with add ons... they are wrong. in a way... 1st of all media center is a spinn off of home edition. i have media center on my comp. it is great. what they ment by pro with add ons is it is as easy as pro. go with media center. better. if you have hdtv then definetely get it. this is just like comcasts DVR box. it is great. i built my computer. it cost me over 1000 buks to do it but i built it. one thing it has in it is a TV tuner and the extention software for media center. i am always using it. i am on my comp almost 24/7. i do all my work on it. my life is on my comp... but if i want to see a TV show that is on in a week.... i program in the recording on the comp. then i have a wireless transmitter from my comp to my TV so i can watch it. also you get more for your money with the media center comp. don't let dell n all those other bull ******** lie to u... when they say reat deal for 500 buks for a comp with 256mb.... that is a bull faced lie. for the same price as a 500 dollar dell, i built my cuz a comp that had double the stuff plus double the warentee and better parts. i get all my parts from www.newegg.com. if u have any other questions e-mail me at: Zac_da_tech@comcast.net. hope this helped... ttyl
