iRiver H320 vs. Archos Gmini 400

I think the H320 will have the best audio quality and functions, but I'm a bit apprehensive about the plastic build. I don't know if the Gmini 400 is made of plastic or brushed steel. Has anyone actually tried the video function on the H320? (with the firmware upgrade).

The H320 has lots of SRS effects and EQ settings, but speaking strictly of audio quality I doubt you would be disappointed with the Gmini.
Plus, the Gmini is smaller and lighter, which is pretty hot for a device that plays audio, video, and games.
Oh, and I almost forgot about the CompactFlash drive on the Gmini. How cool is that? Connect your digital camera directly and store all your pictures there.
The only thing I question about the Gmini is its looks (a little too much like a Game Boy Advance). But if you're alright with that I would definitely go with the Gmini 400.

It comes as part of a cool remote which attaches to the gmini and allows full control of the unit without having to turn on the screen. It also has a mic on it for voice recording.
Added bonus... The Gmini has amazing battery life, with the FM Remote you can increase it even more becuase the screen doesnt need to be on to navigate through tracks.

by fartinggeese - 3/1/05 9:26 PM In reply to: iRiver H320 vs. Archos Gmini 400 by chillyxpressi hav an iriver h320. once i loaded 1200 songs onto it, it drastically slowed down. it takes about 30 seconds to turn on now. and when you select a song to play, it takes a while to start the song. and more to add to that, it's constantly freezing on me. i've had to press teh reset button so many times already. the features are really cool. i would definitely go with iriver... if it had a faster processor.

I was able to check it out first-hand at Fry's Electronics and compare it to the other mp3 units. It does have brushed steel. It is sleek and smooth, very attractive. One other option you should consider is the ability to transfer songs from the mp3 unit back to a computer. Archos is one of the only units that will do this. Most other units do not have this capability (they must believe we are sharing are music libraries with the whole world.) I have had an Archos Recorder since 2001 and have loved it. I'm now ready to upgrade to the Gmini. Buy.com has a $20 rebate on the Gmini 400 until March 27th.

Decisions, decisions...

I was thinking about Zen Micro but not sure about headphone port problems. What mp3 player do you own personally? as I am open to other suggestions too...

The first player i bought was a creative nomad zen xtra, which was ok, except that it stopped working about two months after i got it. then i got a rio karma, which was great. It has great sound quality and easy menus. its not very durable though, i dropped it once and it stopped working. Now as soon as i get the money i think i am getting the gmini 400. so there you go
