what's a good registry cleaner?

by militantmike - 1/25/05 2:35 PM

what's a good registry cleaner? also when using software (not add remove programs) to delete or remove programs no longer in use or needed, why isn't there one in exsistence that can tell you which "shared/common/dll's, etc." files to keep or delete? also do unused registry entries and unused shared/common files slow down your machine or do they just sit there?

Registry cleaner

by Bootle - 1/27/05 5:38 AM In reply to: what's a good registry cleaner? by militantmike

There are all kinds of junk left behind in your registry, for instance, when programmes that you have removed leave stuff behind or maybe a file left a reminder behind after being transfered somewhere. All these remnants are just clutter which can slow down your computer and cause errors by clogging -up the registry.
I have beem using 'Registry Mechanic' for over a year and have found that it has given me excellent service since I installed it. It finds the rubbish and then you see what it has found prior to clicking to activate a repair. It even does a back-up point if you want to restore something ( I have never needed to restore anything! )
All this junk can be accessed and removed manually by editing the registry yourself but this can be disastrous for your computer if (1) you have not backed up your registry (2) you edit incorrectly (2) you do not know what I am talking about.
I hope this missive will be of some help to you as it has taken me ages to type it.

New Upgrade W2K to XP/Pro & Mechanic

by tom041652 - 2/19/05 2:51 PM In reply to: Registry cleaner by Bootle

I tried Mechanic on my recently upgraded W2K to XP/Pro and it said it found over 500 errors to get rid of.

Well, since I could restore it and I had a recent Ghost image of my C: drive I gave it free hand to delete or rename these errors. Low and behold about half of my software wouldn't work because of some .dll, .com or .exe or registry error. Or, the program just sat there doing nothing.

I immediately restored all it had deleted and removed Registry Mechanic 4.0 from my system.

HPotoker, The links below have the Free download. Be careful when using it especially the duplicate files which I'd stay away from.

My Vote, Easy Cleaner

This thread forced my hand over the weekend. I checked several of the freebies. Easy Cleaner was the easiest to get and by far the easiest to use. Almost blew up my Recycle Bin with all the *&#$% it found. Also gets cookies, .tmp file, and other stuff. Stay away from the 'duplicates'.

removing unwanted software.

by shafiqkhan31 - 2/21/05 6:21 AM In reply to: I picked... by FrankQTran

I once used yahoo messanger and an ISP Tiscali. I tried to remove them from my system using the normal xp system's remove utility. There are persistant bits left.
I still have Tiscali on top this page telling me "Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Tiscali". I am sure it is not. yahoo messanger poses a similar problem. When I go to remove it the message comes up to tell that it can not find uninstal etc. Of course I uninstalled it but it still is in the list of the software I have on my computer.
Please help.

shafiqkhan31, To remove the "provided by Tiscali" from the "Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Tiscali" go to the link below and under the letter "B" scroll down to "Branding - Remove" where you'll find several fixes.

To remove items fron your Add/Remove Programs which are uninstalled but still appear on the list many use Add/Remove Pro which is available for Free at the link below.
