Vaio GRZ660 Help

by pstngirl - 10/3/04 2:01 PM

Just wanted to know if others have had trouble with this model. I purchased mine March 2003 based on my confidence in the Sony name But have had problems with it. I only had it 2 months and it had to be shipped to CA for a new motherboard. Now my warranty is expired and I am having trouble again. I thought it was a short in the power cord and I bought a new one for $150. However that did not solve the problem. It will power up if I hold the cord in the socket so I think it must be a short in the socket. Where should I go for service? I have repaired a desktop on my own. Should I attempt that or ??????? Wondering if I should have bought another brand of laptop!!! Thanks for any imput.

A short is unlikely. An "open" is more likely and a good technician should be able to open it up and solder what is loose back into place. Figure from 50 to 100 bucks for the service.

R. Profitt, Thanks for your reply! I'm not a real techy so I do not know the diff between a short and an open but nice to know that info before I take it in for repair. I really appreciate your input. pstngirl

Open vs. short.

An open is where the circuit is not completed. In your case the power is not making it to the laptop.

A short is usually noted when the power is shorted out and the sparks fly or parts heat up and burn out. It's common for most to interchange the terms.

vaio grz660 and overheating and turning off, please advice..

by tainian2000 - 2/18/05 6:26 PM In reply to: Re: Vaio GRZ660 Help by R. Proffitt Moderator

Dear moderator: my vaio grz660 after a year the battery started to give problems because it overheats the computer and then it turns off. I thought it was that the battery discharged but I operated with the ac charging cord. well Sony is not good at service and gave me a run around to let my warranty expire...after they adviced that I could call the 800 number...not good and then that I had to mail my laptop to S.Francisco to be serviced at my expense even when they recalled the deffective batteries...
Is there any user friendly do yourself programming to make the fan run faster or to reduce the heat...
I installed additional ram of 556 aprox ram , it runs with 7hundred something ram..is there anything to be done...please help!

Shut down

My daughter has a GRZ610. I think that your's is almost the same machine. Sony came out with a service bulletin in December...the problem with that model is dust and dirt accumulation around the fan. My daughter's machine was shutting down also. I bought a can of compressed air and cleaned the dust and the fuzz balls out from underneath. The machine now runs quieter and does not shut down. Try it and see if it works for you. Let us know.
