which do you prefer? i personally think corel is more flexible, but adobe has become industry standard. what do yall think?
Adobe and Corel make many products. I'll share what I'm using that may or may not be useful to you.
1. Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7
Very useful for me.
2. The GIMP
A little nutty, but free and works hard.
3. JAWS PDF Creator
It was with a 15 dollar CD magazine. Can't beat it for producing PDF's... (Cheaply!)
4. Open Office Suite
http://www.openoffice.org I install it on all my machines. The killer app.

Which apps are you talking about? Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator vs. Coreldraw? Is Painter in there somewhere?
All are good. As you mentioned, the Adobe products have become industry standards so it's important to be proficient in them if you are doing professional work, especially for print. However if files are properly constructed and saved it usually wouldn't matter to most good prepress houses or printers what software was used.
I personally prefer Photoshop for raster art and Macromedia Freehand (until they messed it up in 10) for vector work.
We are fortunately blessed with many fine graphics programs.
Is this for your personal use or for a possible future? Anyway, go with adobe because it is industrial standard and it is easier to get help for. If for personal use and am not doing heavy duty designing, check out Photoshop Elements.
