CWS variants come too quickly for most anti-spyware tools

by HikingStick - 2/9/05 6:46 AM In reply to: RE:COOL WEB SEARCH by acemstate

I've battled this beastie a couple of times, and last night was the first time I lost.

An interesting history can be found (sorry, I didn't bookmark the URL), and it appears that CWS is being updated so frequently that most anti-spyware tools can't keep up.

Search for CWS removal tools, and you will come across links to CWshredder. It should do the job (based on all other user comments here and elsewhere), but even then it is recommended you use only versions of the tool that are less than a week or two old (so they will mitigate the current CWS family). Rights to CWshredder were recently acquired by another company, so I'm not sure of its current status (e.g. if it is still free).

Here's the site where I learned about this particularly resilliant beastie...

This is an old thread that you replied to and I'm unsure of you are telling us that you have a CWS variant, or you got rid of it already? Yes, cwshredder is still free and yes, there are always new variants of CWS coming out but the tool still does eliminate many of the variants. A new version of the tool came out on Monday. The tool is owned by Intermute now. The OLD version was 2.12, The newest version 2.13 although Intermute's website is calling it 2.14 for some reason so I just downloaded it again out of curiousity and even though they are saying it is 2.14 on Intermute's website, that must be a misprint because the one I just downloaded a few minutes ago from their link is still 2.13. Anyway, if you need it you can get it here
