AntiSpy progs

by gocker35 - 2/8/05 1:21 PM In reply to: 2/08/05 My favorite antidote for spyware is: by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I tried MS AntiSpy Beta and it messed up more than it helped. I'll stick with Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware, along with Registry First Aid and Trojan Killer.

Why So Many?

I use Pest Patrol and follow up with Adaware SE. I did not like the Microsoft Beta. Be sure you keep backups with Micro Beta, you will need em sooner or later when you notice a particular program fails to run.In my case it was Kaspersky Anti-Virus

Very nasty VX2

by metman4u - 2/8/05 2:10 PM In reply to: 2/08/05 My favorite antidote for spyware is: by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

After using AdAware Plus, Microsoft AntiSpyware (beta), Spyware Doctor and Spybot VX2 though removed would "morf" into different dynamic link libraries on reboot. I had to go into the install/repair mode on the WIN XP CD under administrative control to remove the highly invasive software and library links. Three weeks of infection and reinfection are finally over.

Anti-Spyware

by DEEPCPU - 2/8/05 2:27 PM In reply to: 2/08/05 My favorite antidote for spyware is: by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My current best contender has got to be Microsoft AntiSpyware (beta), for one very simple reason.
Over Christmas Lop.com released some very unpleasant mallware which placed un-delitable icons on the desktop pointing to gambling and other very unwanted sites.
As I say these were undeletable, requiring a special delete program from those nice Lop peole to remove it.

AntiSpyware would have prevented it's altering the registry in the first place.
Ad-Aware did not know the code was there.

I still use both, Ad-aware has been a good friend down the years, but it shuts the don't shut the door.

msn antispyware

by captainmackey - 2/8/05 2:29 PM In reply to: 2/08/05 My favorite antidote for spyware is: by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have used spybot for years and found that of all these programs a combination of spybot and ad-Aware se but was pleasantly suprised with antispyware. Tell your people that a combination of the three is the best and if only one is used, then it would be antispyware. I am a systems manager and have tried all of them that I could find.

As with any security solution, best practice is multiple layers and vendors. But, lets not forget to keep our OS’ updated, A/V updated and some sort of firewall protection. Having said that, my preference for nuisance programs I am currently using Microsoft AntiSpyware (beta), PestPatrol and very pleased with the results thus far.

My favorite antidote for spyware is

I help to maintain several computers. When I found Spybot Search & Destroy I thought that there was no match. I downloaded and ran Microsoft AntiSpyware (beta) on my personel computer. The beta program found spyware that shouldn't have been there, the Spybot was in place and monitoring.

My favorite spyware/adware detector and remover

by erniemink - 2/8/05 6:18 PM In reply to: 2/08/05 My favorite antidote for spyware is: by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Ad-Aware and then Spybot. Microsoft wants to create a spyware detector and remover but how does anyone know that they don't ever use any tracking cookies or software either? Makes you wonder being the richest company above the surface.

Trend Micro claims PC-cillin also scans and protects the system from spyware.

Trend Micro,Norton,McAfee and a few others do scan for spyware but dont waste your time, they will overlook most spyware. They specialize in Anti-Virus protection. The spyware scan/protection is very minimal..

So Far Nothing?

by bluemalibu71 - 2/8/05 6:35 PM In reply to: 2/08/05 My favorite antidote for spyware is: by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I used to use Ad-aware SE and Spybot Seek And destroy. I downloaded the beta of Microsoft Anti-spyware and have seen no improvement over the other two. I found more cookies, registry keys, and other files that were considered spyware with Ad-aware and Spybot than Microsofts spyware app. In fact since I have installed Mirosofts antispyware and done numerous scans, I have found nothing. At least with ad-aware and spy-bot I found something. Makes me wonder how accurate Microsofts product really is. I am going to re-install Ad-aware and Spy bot to see how much "stuff" has managed to sneak past Microsoft.
