Is an extended warranty advised on a Sony Plasma?

I am ready to order a SONY KDE-42XS955plasma TV. I would like some feedback from people familiar with the issue of extended warrantys for a set like this.
I'm wondering if the current generation of sets are reliable enough to make an extended warranty unnecessary.
BTW, the warranty I would buy is directly from SONY, not another aftermarket firm.
I know in my dark past many years ago selling video at a well known chain, extended warranties were most ADP (Added Dealer profit items.) It was true, every once in a great while one customer who shelled out hundreds of dollars actually need the extended warranty.
I asked one local salesperson about this and he said "I wouldn't buy one - but if you are the sort of person whose new washer breaks down right away, maybe you need it." Can't give him any points for logic - but it sort of pointed out people often buy these warranties for mental security.

Most of the 3 yrs are going for around $350, and 5 yr @ $525/ When you are spending +/- $4K for a TV, the added expense seems worth it considering the cost of repairs should a power supply go bad.
Just curious why you chose the Sony KDE-42XS955 plasma over the Pioneer PHP-4345. I'm about to purchase one of these sets and narrowed it down to these two. Most of the dealers really sing the praise of Pioneer, stating the Sony is "OK". I know Consumer Reports just rated the Sony #1, so the confusion still lingers. Just curious and thanks for the insights.

I purchased last week after weeks of comparing price and picture quality. Now that it is set up in my home, I am not disappointed. HD cable channels are just great. Other cable channels are excellent. However, DVDs do not look good at all. So I purchased Toshiba HDMI DVD player at Best Buy for $150.00. Now DVDs look as good as DVDs on my old non HD TV. I looked at Sonys but prefered HD picture and color of Pioneer and it was a couple thousand less.

I had warranty the first time, would have cost me $700 to fix. Now my TV just broke again, and it's looking like it may cost me $700 again. I wish my warranty wasn't up...
The main video processing board went out on me 2 times, and it is less than 5 years old. Once 2 years ago, and just last week.
I agree, if you are spending 3-4K on the TV, what is another $3-400 bucks, especially when a fix will cost you 2 times as much. Personally I wouldn't buy sony again, but that is just from my experience.

I don't recomend anything sony ever. If you are stuck on sony then yes buy the extended warranty or you will be sorry
