Firefox had its problems on some machines

by pascal333 - 2/5/05 11:29 AM In reply to: 2/04/05 Why is my Internet Explorer encountering problems? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I switched to Firefox on 4 machines. Love the way the program works. But after a while, it started rufusing to open on my laptop (no problem so far on the desktops, which get less use...). Taskmanager revealed that Firefox was still running after I had exited it, and shutting it down from the task manager cured the problem...at first. But after a while, nothing worked, Firefox just would not run reliably. I uninstalled and reinstalled, rolled back, literally did everyting I could think of, including restoring a backup. Same problem. It seems that version 1.0 of Firefox or it and one of its principal enhancements, is not compatible with my HP lattop (model ze4560us, 512MB RAM, or to it as it now sits. I have not made any made any major softward changes I can think of except xpSP2. In any case, Firefox is not a universal solution to IE problems (too bad) and if anyone has any suggestion for my problem, I would appreciate hearing it.

firefox

by MichaelF - 2/5/05 7:35 PM In reply to: Firefox had its problems on some machines by pascal333

It does depend on where the problem is, if the problem is in IE then Firefox will fix it, but if the problem goes deeper into the operating system or hardware then the problem will still exist with firefox.

Firefox does have a memory leak but it is fixable by some tweaking. If you type about:config in the address bar and hit enter you will find many adjustable settings. Instructions on some of these and the memory leak can be found here http://windowssecrets.com/041202/#top1

I generally fix the memory leak and speed up firefox by enabling pipelining on machines I have installed it on. I am not overly familiar with HP but I do find that notebooks install a lot of unnecessary background running software. You could go through your software and uninstall or disable software you find that you don't use. Even most sound and video drivers do not need running software as the drivers do all the work. Try to minimise and optimise and clean using above suggestions and then see how it goes.

install Mozilla's Firefox

by toonspire - 2/5/05 8:24 PM In reply to: 2/04/05 Why is my Internet Explorer encountering problems? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

YOU SAID: You should also install Mozilla's Firefox ( http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ ) browser. ... Who knows, you might end up making Firefox your default browser.

I SAY: I DID JUST THAT AND IT'S REALLY GREAT!
I DUMPED IE. < yes!:)

Ah, but keep in mind IE is arguably a known quantity; Firefox hasn't been around that long, so it is premature to consider it a panacea.

It's a good idea to have both browsers installed, just in case an unexpected problem with one suddenly prevents it from accessing the web altogether. In that rare eventuality, you won't be able to download a fix - let alone another browser!

Remember the Boy Scouts' motto: Be Prepared.

what an excellent answer, except for the last bit....

by nottstu - 2/6/05 7:30 AM In reply to: 2/04/05 Why is my Internet Explorer encountering problems? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Thanks for such a clear, well written and informative reply.

I'd just like to add - I entirely agree with what you say about Firefox, I have had it for quite a while and it's quickly become my 2nd choice browser.

But of course it's not second choice to the m$ explorer product, it's second to OPERA, from www.opera.com, which has been better than msie for donkey's ages and remains better than Firefox.

People can go here to find out why - www.tntluoma.com/opera/lover/7 .

Hope you all have a look if you havn't already & that this helps more people to escape the trap of feeling everything has to be microsoft, when there are actually equally good or better or cheaper alternatives.

(the 'ofice suite' from www.openoffice.org being another case in point)

cheers.

My Internet Explorer has the same problem

by Mike A. - 2/6/05 4:01 PM In reply to: 2/04/05 Why is my Internet Explorer encountering problems? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had the same problem with my Internet Explorer 6.0, and received the same error message. I have a 3 yr old HP computer, and the software came loaded on it. I receive constant updates from the MS website. What partially fixed my problem was my Defender Pro Firewall software whick identified a bad Earthlink file, possibly from a prior upgrade. Once the file was deleted, my IE6 appears to work fine, except when in YAHOO Messenger. It often still wants to shut down after 15-20 minutes, giving me the same error as before.

Why it crashes

by Amos16 - 2/8/05 7:44 AM In reply to: 2/04/05 Why is my Internet Explorer encountering problems? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had the same problem for quite some time, with XPpro and Explorer 5.5. Each time I asked for details I was switched to the windows update site. It seems that this was the way of Microsoft to push their SP2, which I believe - like many of us - not to be ripe yet. I used a little application that stops SP2 from entering the computer (until April 2005), but did import all the other updates. Since then the "must close" bother has been reduced to almost zero. I forgot the exact identification of the site but it was something like StopPS2.com - I am sure that someone will know about it. This is far shorter and easier than the detailed instructions above - I would try it first. Amos.

No Sp2

by MichaelF - 2/8/05 5:38 PM In reply to: Why it crashes by Amos16

Sopping SP2 installation is easy, Turn off automatic updates. Its easy, right click on My Computer, select Properties and then click the Windows Update tab. Then select Turn Off Automatic...

This does not stop you from selecting Windows Update from the program menu and scanning your computer for updates and then selecting which ones are required (use custom and not express). This is the recommended way of getting windows update by the general community as willy nilly letting it install what it wishes can cause problems, especially now that some drivers are finding their way into critical updates.

So no patch installation is needed. There is also no expiry date, you choose when to install.

Microsoft's Security

by amanishakhete - 2/15/05 5:52 PM In reply to: 2/04/05 Why is my Internet Explorer encountering problems? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I feel that this is a ploy by Microsoft to get us to download the SP2 patch. I have downloaded a couple of their security patches and so far, I have not been kicked out as much.
