Sanyo 30" Widescreen HD TV

by seadood99 - 1/27/05 9:09 AM

This Sanyo HDTV Model No. HT30744 is the bargain of the century! The picture is so clear and colorful. The features are excellent, and the HD tuner is built in. The price I paid is an unbelievable $647. It comes with a 1 year parts and labor warranty, and on Walmart.com I purchased an additional 3 years parts and labor warranty for $42, for 4 years total warranty. HDTV shows are incredible in clarity and realism. I can't wait for the Super Bowl, and more importantly the 2005 Nascar season which is all in HD. In addition, all of the programs in digital format are spectacular and perfect. And finally, Sanyo televisions are consistently the most reliable, best quality televisions you can buy according to Consumer Reports readers' survey. You couldn't ask for more. Thank you Sanyo, and Walmart!

Sanyo 30 HT30744

I agree with seadood99, this is a great bargain and assembled in the USA. The Sanyo is much better than the 32" Panasonic XF HD set I have. Panasonic failed after 3 years. $400 repair at official Panasonic Service Shop lasted 4 months. I got a DOA Sanyo (power supply) from Walmart. Taking it back was a pain, but Walmart was good about replacing the unit. I am using a $9.95 Radio Shack 15-1867 attenna and am picking up HDTV signals perfectly. I am about 30 miles from towers. Even the HDTV tuner is great.

Excellent price with Excellent picture

Just picked up this set for my parents. Hooked it up with the indoor antenna. Channel came in Crytal clear.
Bought it Sat so there's couple channel broadcast in HD during the day like PBS. Hooked up to progressive scan DVD player and picture looked awesome. I played Shrek2 and the picture looked almost like HD quality, I guess maybe because shrek was done digitally. It even comes with Toslink optical output if your receiver has it you're all set to go with 5.1 audio if the programs are simulcast with it. It's very fortuanate that where my parents live close to Mass border so they'll able to pick up ABC and NBC from Mass. So they ended up with two Abc and two NBC and CBS, UPN, WB, Fox and PBS with Indoor antenna. Some channel you have to adjust the antenna a little bit to get strong signal. I put the antenna outside and the signal goes all the way up so I ordered an outdoor antenna for them to attached it to the dish so they'll get strong steady signal. Was thinking of swithing their Dishnetwork to Voom but from reading the news don't think Voom is doing so good. I'll wait and see.
I love the set so much that I'm even thinking of getting one for myself. It's not just the price it's the quality also. A set like this with tuner built-in. You can't go wrong, I thought 30" would look small but it's kind of perfect if you're not building a home theater. I only wish they only offer more HDTV programs. You have to wait until 8:00PM to catch the HD programs from the the major network. Unless you're into soap opera I think the young and the restless is broadcast in HD everyday and PBS is repeating the HD programs throughout the day.

How do 4:3 programs look?

by chaan - 1/31/05 6:45 PM In reply to: Sanyo 30" Widescreen HD TV by seadood99

Are programs broadcast in 4:3 ratio displayed without being elongated or stretched into letterbox? I saw this set at Walmart and almost bought it but no one could answer this question because their video feed was fixed.

How are DVDs? ( no 480? )

What happens if you PAP with a letterbox and 4:3 signal side by side ?

Thanks

How do 4:3 programs look?

by seadood99 - 2/7/05 1:10 PM In reply to: How do 4:3 programs look? by chaan

They look fanatastic. The quality line is between digital broadcast (excellent), and I use DirecTV which looks really good, but not as good as digital over the air, and then HDTV digital takes it to the ultimate level of quality. I went to four different Walmarts trying to find one with the remote for this TV to demo the zoom screen for 4:3 programs. None had it, so I took a chance and again this set is outstanding. On the remote there is "Pix Shape" and this goes between normal, full, zoom 1 and zoom 2. Full fills the screen but looks stretched. Zoom 1 is awesome. No distortion, fills most of the screen, looks natural.
As far as PAP, the two boxes are half the screen each regardless of the input.
I use composite video inputs on two DVD units and the picture is superb.
Hope this helps.

zoom question

by bosanovaboy - 3/6/05 1:38 AM In reply to: How do 4:3 programs look? by seadood99

So far I'm sold after reading all the reviews, my only question is: If you zoom in (zoom1, zoom2 or full) in order to loose the black bars (top and bottom of a widescreen dvd) do you loose part of the picture on your left and right side?
By the way, thanks to all for your imput, you made me a better informed consumer.
Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Does anyone have any complaints?

by duhman - 3/4/05 10:57 AM In reply to: Sanyo 30" Widescreen HD TV by seadood99

I am strongly considering buying this TV. It sounds like a great "bang for your buck" purchase. I've been reading through the comments in this thread and I don't really see anything negative. I hate to sound like a pessmist, but I just want to be informed. Is there anything this TV is missing that you would love to see? Any issues that you just can not stand? Thanks in advance!

Just remember, this is not an lcd. It's 130 pounds of television. Wear a weightlifter's belt when installing!

Zoom Question Reply & price is NOW $562 at Wal-Mart suprcntr

by heidleberg78 - 3/12/05 10:21 PM In reply to: zoom question by bosanovaboy

Zoom 1 does take a small bit of the picture away and leaves smaller side bars while Zoom 2 takes more of the picture away but leaves no bars. However it is still a great picture and if you have to have all the picture you can use the "full" setting. Yeah, it looks a little stretched but it is not that bad when you get used to it. This is a phenomenal TV for $562 now. I am a teacher so I try to get the best value/quality balance I can and nothing can compare to this TV right now. Movies look great, even my wife agrees. Buy it if you can afford it.
