Sanyo DMX C4 (aka VPC C4) vs. Pentax MX4...

by macosie - 12/22/04 7:29 PM

Has anyone had a chance to compare these two cameras? Both claim to be a combo Digi Cam/Camcorder. I've read a few reviews on both, and generally their specs match up well, but I'd really like to find out how they match up against eachother.
I did order the Sanyo (based on the reviews I read) but I would really like to see a comparison.
Also, are there any other competitors in this fairly new category? I've heard that Panasonic has something similar.
Cheers.

Camcorder look alikes

These started showing up a couple of years ago.

All of the early ones were low cost gimmick cameras.

They have the appearance of a camcorder but are actually a digital camera with a different suit on.

Some of the bigger names have now come out with this form of camera. And the quality is better than the first units that were on the market.

The sales on this form factor have been low and the professional reviewers are not likely to be interested. The Pentax MX4 was reviewed by StevesDigicams.

Sanyo VPC-C4

I am interested in getting a video camera that has virtually no moving parts - i.e. no tape, no DVD etc and is small like the VPC-C4. But I am waiting for some reviews to see how they work out. I looked at the Sanyo Web site and the C-4 in not listed in the US and on E-bay all the sites I looked at are off shore. I would be interested in where you got yours - are you in the US and what the import duty was if you are in the US and if you have the camcorder - what are your views.

Thanks --- Bruce

Sanyo C4

Unfortunately I'm not in the States, so I can't help you out there. A friend and I bought two together (we live in Korea.) She got one, and has been playing with it for a day, and her and her husband are happy so far. Mine had to go back because of a problem, but they are sending me a new one. (They were cool about the change, and it was one of those factory issues that about 10% of electronics have when they come out of the box.)
Anyway, my friends is cool and works like a top. My new one will come tomorrow, and I will play with it over New Years. I'll post a mini review here.

Incidently, I paid about 635 000 won (about $600US), which I figured isn't too bad, as compared to the ones I've seen on the net. That price included a 1 Gig SD card, and I didn't have the hastle of added shipping and tax and all that kinda crap. There are a few places that have it on Froogle.com for less, so I say check it out.

Have you looked at the Pentax??? It's seems easier to get, and it's super cheap in the states(Under $300 US)compared to what it is here in Korea (closer to $500).

Also, what are you looking for in a camcorder... it will help me with my review. I bought it because of the Camera/Camcorder aspects... IF you're looking for a strict camcorder, I don't know if the C4 is for you.

Take a look.

DMX-C4

I also am searching for a similar product. The Panasonic camera does NOT, however, live up to the same standard as the DMX-C4 by any standard except size. Do you have any info on the Nikon?? I am very interested in the Sanyo -- size, quality of video and 4 megapixel snaps. Any good prices??
