Internet Explorer is, for today the path that SPYWARE takes to get into your machine. Said SPYWARE has been the number one reason for SP2 issues.
Not to mention all the other bad effects.
For now, until Microsoft cleans up IE, use another browser whenever possible.

What do you suggest Bob? I've never tried another browser. I also noticed that my Google was being hijacked. I ran Spybot, Adware, Spysweeper and didn't get any signs of malware. BTW I also have a Dell 4400. Can that be part of my problem with SP2? Is there a Dell glitch? Should I try to reinstall? How does SP2 help? My computer was taking 20 minutes or more to reboot. I never got an error message when I went to download SP2...just the problems with not allowing hyperlinks, mail, etc. Will my computer run faster if SP2 works properly? Since I've taken out SP2 my computer works normally...
The usual free tools are discussed daily in the Virus and Security Forum. Such as Adaware, Spybot...
As to another browser, look up FIREFOX on google.com

I had no problems installing and running SP2, but I did notice that if I used IE I couldn't surf the web like I used to. I found out that with SP2 a firewall is automatically installed. I turned off that firewall and use the firewall that I have with Trendmicro, and all of those little quirks were gone. I use Mozilla firefox for my browswer, while everyone else uses IE. They don't complain about it not working either.
I installed XP with SP2 on my machine (Dell 8400) with no problems. I upgraded a friend from W98 SE to XP (an earlier Dell 2 or 3 years old)with Service Pack 1 - no intractable problems. Then downloaded SP2. IE wouldn't go to any sites - constantly got "the page cannot be loaded" error. I spent over four hours working through everything with no beneficial effect. After a sleepless night puzzling over the problem, I finally came to the solution. Go to IE | Tools | Internet Options |Advanced | Restore Defaults. BINGO - all was well. I believe that SP2 changed these internet options. If anyone has this problem - There's the answer - no charge.
I never had any problems running SP1. After SP2, I couldn't control my internet options. I tried to reset, go back to default, low protection and it kept defaulting to Med control and it didn't allow the allow java script or any other download or hyperlinking, among other things. I couldn't get video stream and it many times wouldn't allow music. I blamed it on everything until my friend alerted me to the SP2 problems. I still have the microsoft window telling me that I need to download patches and I am afraid to try...
Loaded SP2 and immediately had problems, chief among them was that I could NOT gain access to my bank account and pay bills as I had done routinely before loading SP2. Had to work with both Microsoft and bank techs to arrive at a compromise using Internet Explorer rather than MSN-9. Bank tech advised that many customers reported same problem with SP2. Result: I have avoided downloading SP2 on my other three computers. CRCarlsen
Just make sure you don't have 2 firewalls turned on. It sounds like a crazy idea, but with SP2 you get one. If you already have one with your virus protection you have too much protection. Turn off the one in Windows and use the one you always used. The only thing I have is a stupid window that pops up telling me I am at risk because I turned it off.
At first, I was hesitant to load SP2 after reading about everyone's problems. I waited a few months, then decided to take the plunge. First, I made sure there were no viruses and the PC was already running without problems. After installing SP2, I have had absolutely NO problems. I did turn off the XP firewall, as I run ZoneAlarm, McAfee antivirus, and weekly checks with both Ad-Aware and Spybot.
Using both IE6 and MSN9 - have not encountered an issue with email, web surfing, online banking (multiple banks), Adobe & Macromedia products, or MS Office XP.
PC is a Sony Vaio PCV-RX651 desktop (1.8GHz, 512MB, 80GB hard drive, and an additional USB 2.0 PCI board), plugged into Verizon DSL at 3Mb/768Kb. Also have several USB devices (Logitech Webcam, Sandisk Compactflash reader, Sandisk xD-card reader, HP Deskjet 940c printer), and my Palm on a serial port. All devices are working flawlessly.
While I don't doubt some PCs will have issues, it seems the trick to a successful SP2 install is to make sure your PC is clean and running smoothly BEFORE you begin the upgrade.
First of all, it's not always about SP2. Need to update drivers for one, then go to security in control panel and configure security for you CD. That's all.
I use netscape 7 Will i have problems with sp2?
you need to be fully prepared before you upgrade to SP2.
Netscape 7.1 or 7.2 works well with SP2 as do any other browser. But what SP2 does is to "find out" exisiting problems your computer may have that you may not be aware of.
There is a multitude of advice in these forums about what you should do, and looking at the replies in this thread gives you most of the answers. Have a look at the advice in this thread for preparing yourself, (and your computer), prior to upgrading;

I have networked PC. My main I loaded with no problems, and has been functioning ok. I have XP pro.
My other Pc though after I loaded SP2 had loads of issues. The PC was connected to the network, but no Network related program woudld function, ie: AOL's AIM(my daughters), and I didnt hear the end of that, IE, Mial, Sandra, etc. You'd click on the program and it would instantly disappear. This PC also has XP pro.
The dilemma I found out later was that I had Spyware loaded, and SP2 and Spyware = PROBLEMS
Went to safemode, untinstalled SP2, got SP1 back, and the PC returned to normal. To date, the other PC does not have SP2, but it does have ZoneAlarm for safekeeping and Norton Anitvirus.
I do not know If I really want to load SP2 though I've been told the copy you get from Microsoft Auto Update is NOT clean to load. So I need to find a clean copy of SP2.
Greg
if you have spyware and uninstalled SP2, you "still" have spyware.
Your computer may be working ok, but you have not solved the underlying problem.

Microsoft offers a FREE CD with SP2 on their website - not even a shipping fee. It's great if you have a slow internet connection, or want to keep a CD around for emergencies/rebuilding. After you load the SP2 CD, there will be a few additional security updates that you can get by running Windows Update.
