XP SP-2 can cause probs.

by snharden - 1/27/05 5:09 PM In reply to: SP2 doesn't "take you down" by MarkFlax Moderator

It is correct that SP-2 can cause probs on some systems but its usually that those systems already had probs anyway. But every system running SP-1 should handle SP-2 although you may need to do a complete reinstall of XP to get it right. In my opinion its worth it because I think XP SP-2 is moving much closer to a secure OS than any previous Wondows OSes. Microsoft will mail free CD's to people who order them by phone or from the web.

Just seek it out at their website. Installation goes more smoothly with a clean fresh install of XP and SP-2 from the CD......Hope this helps someone.

SP2 can indeed cause problems.

I have to agree with you that in many cases, a fresh install of the OS works best. That was the case with my Dell 4600 desktop. The updated windows installer was the reason I had to nuke my drive and start over. I was not able to get any downloads from Microsoft's site. Once I had XP SP1 loaded, I immediately installed SP2. After that I reinstalled all of my applications and have been problem free.

I reccomend that everyone gets SP2. It is a great opportunity for a fresh start.

SP2 !!

by getready - 1/28/05 11:43 AM In reply to: SP2 doesn't "take you down" by MarkFlax Moderator

I Agree with you, SP2 is well worth having, BUT only if you purchase a computer already installed with it. I have SP2 on both of my laptops ...preinstalled fr. factory, never any problems ...KNOCK ON WOOD... (of course, I have had crashes, virus's , and a lot of other headaches, (the never ending battle for all), but none due to SP2. My husband, the commander and chief of the desktop, downloaded SP2, and what a mess! It wiped out dial-ups, files, just about everything in system. I could not re-create anything, even with backup disk. That problem had to go to the shop. They could not determine problem, other than to resolve it by taking out SP2 and putting back as was before. He had prepared so carefully before installation and then continued the download, which I will say took forever, but "NO" success .... which went through perfectly and installed. Gained nothing, only lost time, info and files, and money. I have to agree, It CAN TAKE YOU DOWN!

Inspiron 1150 had no real problems so far.

by Matt Brailsford - 1/28/05 4:47 PM In reply to: SP2 took me down two by pdp

I see alot of mudslinging here.

Im just going to say that i bought my Notebook a while after SP2 came out and i installed it soon after, problem free.

I use McAfee Antivirus.

The only problems i had were when i go to Shockwave.com, with all the 'intentional' game popups, or other places of the like.

Maybe its because you have to keep your computer organized and up to date like i keep mine.

I know somebody running a $2500$ (canadian) Toshiba whose filesystem is a mess, and she's having problems.

(Im running a $1700 Dell Inspiron 1150, and i was unable to get Dell's fix for user's in the USA with SP2.)

For what it's worth

by jahan - 1/28/05 3:00 AM In reply to: Don't Load Windows XP SP2 by faw

I was hesitant to install XP SP2 after hearing some of the stories posted on these forums.
Did it anyway, and have found the system to be less prone to crashing but probably a bit more buggy.
I have language support for both English and Japanese across all apps, and this seems to be the main problem. If anyone can offer advice on how to debug this issue, it would be most welcome.
Just in case;
64 bit AMD 3200+
Western Digital 10Krpm 80Gb HD 8Mb cache
1 Gb RAM (not sure which)
Matrox dual monitor video card

Suggestion

by Jump - 1/28/05 3:15 AM In reply to: Don't Load Windows XP SP2 by faw

The XP CD from Microsoft is free. I have seen problems with downloaded installations - who knows why - so perhaps get your free copy and install/update from that.
I must also admit, that i have seen computer problems from MS updates - there is one update for Win98 that totally messes with one of the drivers for an audio card.
But generally speaking, none of the "Security" Updates seem to be much of a problem.

One can always wait till SP3 - lol

Problems rare

by tbcass - 1/28/05 3:17 AM In reply to: Don't Load Windows XP SP2 by faw

Just another example of bad technical support. It seems that whenever I have had a problem with computer related equipment (which isn't that often) I know more than the tech on the phone. As fpr SP2, I've loaded it on several computers without any problems at all. That doesn't mean you won't have a problem but as far as I can tell problems are rare.

Sure agree.....Tech support not always reliable and difficult to understand accent, most likely speaking to tech located in India. Recently spent hours and about 10 calls to fix a problem with recording on Satellite System, finally gave up. Then decided on one more try.... told that there was a problem with their software that should be fixed within a month. Go figure.

Dell has the problem,

by TexasZee - 1/28/05 4:14 AM In reply to: Don't Load Windows XP SP2 by faw

If a CD installed in a Dell system has a problem with SP2, it should be Dells responsibilty to find the fix and issue an update. If not, then they are not being responsible enough.

I have had an issue with purchasing a "brand name " computer mainly for proprietary issues for a long time. Only OEM I have any real success with is an Emachine.

I have installed SP2 on 4 Machines ... 3 Emachines and 1 Sony with 1 botched upgrade due to myself. Reinstalled and it too worked fine.

Only suggestion I can make is find out the manufacturer of the CDRom / keep pestering Dell.

Not Dells problem

by rouse51 - 1/28/05 6:12 AM In reply to: Dell has the problem, by TexasZee

Everyone made there systems XP capatable when Microsoft released there specs in the beginning. Microsoft has always been a moving target. They are the ones that need to fix there software. I can't tell you how many times that a hardware support has been dropped by microsoft only to have to be added later because microsoft screwed up. Laptops are by there very nature almost impossible to upgrade. If they met Microsoft specs when you loaded XP then if you upgraded to SP1 and SP2 it is microsofts responsibility not Dells. Contact Microsoft support. The company has never sold a completed product and they never will.

"NO" to SP2!

by tsesme - 1/28/05 4:45 AM In reply to: Don't Load Windows XP SP2 by faw

I installed and uninstalled 3 times xin xp sp2 and every time i have different problems. Windows media plays only sound, without any picture, on add/remove programs the option "show updates" dissaprared, my internet became slower. Last but not least, the whole PC became much slower, it takes much more time to load the desktop. I'm back now with sp1 and it's like the old good times.

SP2

by crfqueen - 1/28/05 5:13 AM In reply to: Don't Load Windows XP SP2 by faw

I'm not sure whether there is a trick to SP2. I downloaded it for the supposed protection. Suddenly, every time that I tried to run IE there was a safety bar that basically would not allow me to surf the net without turning it off. Even turning it off, it would not allow me to download, or even copy text. On AOL it wouldn't allow me to hyper-link to any site even within AOL. My daughter who has a yahoo mail acct. wasn't allowed to see her mail. I tried everything that I could think of. None of my internet option buttons worked. It kept on going back to med. protection but would not allow java script etc. I had no idea what was happening to my computer.
I tried taking off the virus scanners that I had just replaced. I got rid of Spysweeper thinking that was the problem...nothing worked.I bought airline tickets and I could not print out the information. Thank goodness that the travel company emailed me the information and I printed it out, not on my computer...on my work PC. It wasn't until I had friends over at Christmas that I was telling my friends what a mess my computer had turned into, that one of the guys asked me if I had SP2. He told me to remove the program. I didn't know I could. I am elated to have removed it! My computer has gone back to functioning again.
