Zen Micro ok for jogging?

by courtenay27 - 1/20/05 5:58 PM

Does anyone know if the drives in the Zen Micro are prone to skip or would have problems if it is used as a jogging companion? The 5 gigs is very appealing but for activities should I just get a 1 gig Muvo TX FM?
Thanks.

Not really....

Creative says that you shouldn't jog with the player since it's HD based, however the HD has 25 minutes of anti-skip. Even so, I wouldn't recommend jogging with any HD based player 'cause it would really suck if you had to reaplace a 350 CAD piece of equipment cause you jogged with it.

I do it fine

A lot of people buys M3players for running, or working out. That was the reason I first bought a 128K flash player to try it out one year ago (not a creative).
3 "customer needs" came to my mind during this trial: wanted more song, organize the songs and especially have better sound quality.
So I bought a 512K one before xmas (also not a creative one), but when I tried the Zen Micro sound quality last week, I got one.
It took a few days to get used to the touch panel now I love it and, I was surprised to see that it never skips during jogging if you hold it tight to your belt to prevent the shaking. I use the Zen belt clip and an elastic belt over it so it stays bonded to my waist.
On 2 occasions it stopped and I had to remove the battery and put it back (5 seconds operation): 1-when it fell from my hands to the floor and 2-after about 45 minutes the first day I went running.
During the last 2 sessions of running no skips.
I AM SATISFIED with this product

get a flash for jogging...

Flash is much smaller and you'll have no worries about skipping/ruining a hard drive.

That's what I did and my plan is to eventually get a 40-60gb as prices come down/hard drives get smaller.

lucasaiella, I'm warning you now to stop posting about your positive experiences jogging with a HDD-based player. I'm also advising you to not jog with it, to protect your investment.

Jogging or heavy exercising with a HDD-based MP3 player may not kill the hard drive the first time, or even the tenth time you do it, but it will eventually kill it. You'll be feeling pretty sheepish when you break your precious $350 gadget and realize you can't go back and edit your posts which told people to do the same dangerous thing as yourself.

I can't find it offhand, but take my word for it that someone came to this message board asking why she had 3 iPod's in a row die in less than a month each - she jogged with them.

thanks but...

Thanks NRen2K5 for the advice, but I bought it basically because i wanna run with it, not for other purposes.
So I will run and if it breaks down I will buy another next time, maybe a flash based 1G.
I hope you a wrong but I am not an expert and I will only lean on direct experience.
I can only say this: now I used it for about 10 sessions and it stopped only the first time (the same day when it fell on the hard floor). yesterday I went 2 hours with the armband.
Also, why everybody jogs with the ipod mini and i can't jog with zen micro? Aren't the ipods the same mini HD technology?

Lucasaiella is correct......

Apple even say on their site that you can run with the ipod mini.
Whilst Creative advise not to run with the Zen Micro, I have the tech sheet from Seagate regarding the hard drive that is in it.
This new hard drive (ST1) in the Zen Micro is actually designed to compensate for the shocks whilst running etc!
Take a look for yourself:

Lucasaiella, please let me know how you get on running with it.

How do you know what driver is used...

by fletcherbr - 2/1/05 10:23 PM In reply to: Lucasaiella is correct...... by holmsey

I've been trying to find the driver type used in the Zen Micro on Creative's website but been unsuccessful. The ST1 sounds like an awesome drive, so I hope it is in the Micro. Right now I'am trying to decide between the Micro and the Rio Carbon. My main question between them is battery life. The Carbon has a huge 20 hour life while the Zen is at 12 hours. I've never owned an MP3 player before so I don't know how important the battery life is. Do you guys have any suggestions on which is better?

battery life and running sessions

by lucasaiella - 2/2/05 3:52 AM In reply to: How do you know what driver is used... by fletcherbr

I haven't had the necessity of using the second battery included in the package yet. My Zen usually gets charged during music uploading and playlist creation, when it's linked to my pc, so I don't even think about charging it really.
For long trips maybe its useful to bring along the second battery.

Running, always ok, I enjoy the ipod mini armband very much. I wonder why Creative doesn't sell them.

Dont Forget about spin ups...

by WuerschDerek - 2/7/05 7:28 AM In reply to: armband by lucasaiella

The whole problem with having a hard drive based player used for jogging is that there is a possibility of it getting damaged while you jostle around. Not from dropping it like some would think, but when the hard drive spins up the movement from jogging could potentially damage the hard drive. Just keep it in mind.

Zen Micro for jogging

by napsterlover2375 - 2/11/05 4:28 PM In reply to: Zen Micro ok for jogging? by courtenay27

I don't have the Zen Micro, but like most mini hard drive mp3 players it can be used for moderate exercise because the player does not move around a lot. However, if you jogged with the Zen Micro it would most likely skip after it's skip protection runs out. If you want to use an mp3 player for jogging get the 1 gig Muvo TX FM, it will hold aroung 240 songs and will not skip.
