iPod Mini

by sbczm04 - 1/21/05 6:09 PM In reply to: Ipod Mini Erased by itskier

It was an issue with iTunes. I had the same problem with a 2nd generation iPod when I tried to download a playlist from a friend's Mac onto the iPod the media was deleted. The computer I had originally used was a Mac as well (G4). I later found out it was a matter of turning of the sync feature in iTunes.

Not all Windows based players are superior to the iPod. The Creative Zen Micro however is superior to the iPod mini.

iPod Mini erased -- iPods may not be cross-platform compatib

by markbult - 1/21/05 2:36 PM In reply to: Ipod Mini erased by gronlijm

I have heard that an iPod formatted on a Mac will not work when used on a PC, and vice versa. This makes sense, since the file system is different for each. Were both computers PCs, or was one a Mac?

Another possibility: If your music was purchased on one computer through the iTunes Music Store, you have to "authorize" each new computer or device you copy that purchased music to, before it will be recnognized or playable. This is an anti-piracy system.

You may want to peruse the iPod FAQ at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60920, or search Apple's Support pages for more info.

WHY?

by mrmacfixit Moderator - 1/21/05 4:53 PM In reply to: Ipod Mini erased by gronlijm

I wonder why Lee Koo posted this question in the weekly CNET newsletter when it had been answered, correctly, at least three times before the newsletter was released.
1. The reason the iPod tracks were deleted is because they had the options set to have iTunes sync with the PC and delete all other things. If in doubt, Read The Manual.
2. It is not a Plot. You can synch more than two iPods to a single computer or computers. This problem had nothing to do with DRM.
3. Yes, an iPod's HD has to be formatted before it will work in a PC. ALL Hard Drives have to be formatted before they work in ANY computer.
4. itskier, what can I say. I guess you wll always be a Windoze user and continue to believe that M$ is the worlds greatest innovators. As mentioned, the iPod will play almost anything except WMA Protected files, and frankly, why would anyone want to listen to something encoded using the WMA codec! So, you go enjoy WMP and believe you are being served well by M$

iPod backup

by mary*abrazo - 1/21/05 8:05 PM In reply to: Ipod Mini erased by gronlijm

Hi,
I suspect that you have the answer by now, it is a simple one. Unless the iTunes on the computer you are using has all the music and books you have on your iPod, they will be erased when you try to update your iPod. If the people who gave it to you had changed the configuration of the iPod to upload manually while it was plugged into their computer, the files are gone.

Perhaps you could send it back to them and have them refill your Pod and reconfigure it. Then you could listen to your gift music and add your own when you wished.

ipod backup(mini/regular ipod and ipod shuffle)

by USGODSSON - 3/30/05 4:14 PM In reply to: iPod backup by mary*abrazo

If you want to back it up, there is a software called Tune transfer. System requirements are Windows 2000/Xp for pc users and for mac users you should be running OS X 10.1.5 or higher. It allows you to transfer any music from the ipods to any machine, so u could be at work and have your music there or a friends house. You can also recover lost songs that may have been deleted by accident or got erased. If your interested you all can read up on it at http://valusoft.com

All iPods

by username1 - 1/21/05 8:12 PM In reply to: Ipod Mini erased by gronlijm

Its a regular occurence. iTunes replaces the old songs with new ones if a different Itunes account is used. The only way to get around this is to transfer the music files to the iTunes that is currently being used with the iPod. Summary: iTunes won't allow users to switch iTunes accounts.

ipods updates

by pkarirose - 1/22/05 2:25 AM In reply to: Ipod Mini erased by gronlijm

mini ipods automatically update when you install yhe software on a computer. this includes over writing any existing songs with songs on the computer you are installing on.

Also you have to create playlists before plugging ipod into computer. you can't delete songs off the ipod must be done in computer. Have to register each ipod used. Have'nt found a way around this as we found out when my friends two daughters got mini's.

I have an mp3 player less songs only about 60 depending on file size but much easier to use no installation of any media players needed. accepts wma format can copy from cd to player. Is drag and drop system.

good luck with your ipod

Read the Manual

by mrmacfixit Moderator - 1/22/05 7:16 AM In reply to: ipods updates by pkarirose

Sorry you seem to be having problems with your iPod but I have to point out that most your statements are not quite correct.
When you install iPod updates, from Apple, onto the host computer, the iPod will automatically download the update when it is next connected. It does NOT delete any tracks. However, if you were downloading tracks from that store who had reverse engineered the iPod code so that their tunes would play on the iPod, YES, at the next update all those tracks would not play on the iPod. (That might not have been your problem though)
By default, iTunes/iPod are set to automatically sync tracks from iTunes to the iPod. By right clicking on the iPod icon in the iTunes window, selecting Options, you can set the iPod to have it's tracks updated manually. Once done, it is a simple drag and drop operation to move tracks from iTunes to the iPod.
Therefore, you do NOT have to create playlists before you plug in the iPod.
Part of the iTunes/iPod installation procedure is to register you iPod with Apple. This is the date from which the warranty starts. If iTunes asked you to register the iPod, it was to keep track of the DRM restrictions imposed by the recording industry.
Can you play your MP3 files on your computer? If the answer is "yes' then you must have a media player installed! The fact that you didn't need to install it before using your < #1 player, is besides the point. iTunes accepts WMA format and converts it to AAC (which does not contain the word APPLE) AAC = Advance Audio Codec which is also known as MPEG4 and is vastly superior to WMA and is a World Wide Standard, unlike WMA which is proprietary.
So, maybe a look at the manual is in order. You sound like a prime candidate for the iPod Shuffle.

by mrmacfixit Moderator - 1/22/05 5:23 PM In reply to: Here we go again... by RenoDavid

going around and around reading all these posts from people who cannot read posts and who obviously have not read the Manual.
Looks like you (RenoDavid) and I are the only ones who read other posts. Thanks for that..Reading that last post, I'm wondering just how iTunes and my iPod are working on my office, forced to use it, W2000 machine? kdog says it only works on XP.

One has to smile

by GBTrevor - 1/24/05 10:54 AM In reply to: I'm getting dizzy by mrmacfixit Moderator

I see the question was answered nicely and in full, what a shame then that we have to have to bickering about DRM, Apple etc.
No product will give you exactly what you want, You have to adjust to what it offers or find the nearest product for your needs, the iPod Vs other MP3 players is no different.
Then of course there is the case of RTM (Read The Manual!

Not owning an iPod (just have to help out troubled clients) I understand there was a utility that would allow iPod into iTunes transfer but was forced to stop marketing it by Apple (can anyone put me right on this one)?

Post 29 of 39

You can do still do that

by RenoDavid - 1/24/05 1:24 PM In reply to: One has to smile by GBTrevor

I just checked versiontracker.com and there are still programs that allow that to be accomplished.

Bit late I know....

by GBTrevor - 2/19/05 3:07 PM In reply to: One has to smile by GBTrevor

I have a client who is using an application that will NOT wipe the iPod, it allows the user to choose how and which way the data flows.
..... only thing is I cannot remember which client and what the app was called. But was not very expensive!
