Digital imaging - gamma adjustment

by rgfitz - 1/13/05 6:13 PM

Irfan View 3.95

I was trying some settings using this free software with a digital photo taken in a hot humid environment with my camera partially fogged, inside and out.

By chance I tried Image > Enhance Colors > Gamma Correction. Decreasing the Gamma setting completely "erased" the fogginess and enhanced the colors.

I can't believe the difference!

A quick Google search didn't yield much information on Gamma other than:

the IrfanView software may use the term "Gamma" differently. In this case it changes the "Gamma" of a digital image rather than a computer monitor.

I noticed the National Geographic Field Guide - Digital, uses a term "Curves" for a digital image adjustment tool that may do the same thing as "Gamma". "Curves" may be a Photoshop tool but I really don't know.
