MS AntiSpyware vs Ad-Aware vs SpyBot

by Donna Buenaventura Moderator - 1/10/05 10:41 PM

On January 6th 2005, Microsoft introduced the first public beta release of its solution to the spyware problem. Dubbed Microsoft AntiSpyware, the application was born after the purchase of Giant Software Company, which developed their anti-spyware application.

Microsoft AntiSpyware offers plenty of features which is sure to turn some heads. Not only does it scan for spyware/adware, it can also offer real-time protection which prevents spyware from being installed in the first place. Though Microsoft's new toy offers really nice feature as we are about to explore, how well does it match up against the already known spyware removal champs; Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D? Find out at http://www.flexbeta.net/main/articles.php?action=show&id=84

Better than SpyBot & AdAware.....

by John Robie - 1/11/05 3:16 PM In reply to: MS AntiSpyware vs Ad-Aware vs SpyBot by Donna Buenaventura Moderator

Interesting to note the last (page 4) comments:

"Though still in beta, Microsoft AntiSpyware was able to detect more infected files than the current leading anti-spyware applications in the market today, Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D. AntiSpyware’s user interface is better looking than both SpyBot and Ad-Aware, not to mention much easier to use than SpyBot. Though Microsoft AntiSpyware was able to use better detection than both Ad-Aware and SpyBot, there is still the difference of cost between the three. Ad-Aware and SpyBot offer great performance for free, yet when Microsoft debuts its AntiSpyware application, it will require a subscription fee. Is Microsoft AntiSpyware really worth the subscription fee when there are currently good spyware removal applications out there that will do it for free? My answer to that question would be, if you can afford the fee, it is absolutely worth it; however, if you chose to use Microsoft AntiSpyware as your spyware removal tool, you will still need to run other tools such as Ad-Aware and SpyBot."

After reading all 4 pages, it seems to me it would be very good to have all three, the pay(after BETA) Microsoft, and the two free ones.

An other Microsoft incomplete fix. Ad-Aware and SpyBot did a better job.

with the last post. As much as I dislike MS, it just now did better than the other two.

Donna…Thanks for the e-point to the flexbeta article. It was an informative article.

I’m on the M$ mailing list so I installed their AntiSpyware Beta on Day 1, right after I cracked open their e-mail. It has great touch & feel usability and other special added features, as described in the flexbeta Ad-Aware & Spybot S&D vs. MS AntiSpyware Beta shoot-off piece.

I tried and am using it. I like it…but I won’t subscribe to it come July. My reasons are practical and philosophical. I use the Ad-Aware & Spybot S&D Freeware dynamic-duo at least once daily. They both have regular update features to keep them current, and in my experience do a fine job of searching for, finding and destroying bad-ware.. I’m a plank-owning Free-Webber who believes in Free-Web for All. So I have a philosophical problem with paying M$ more of my USD $hekel$ for S/W features that should already be there and, at the very least, should be part of a future e-Gratis Win XP/IE “SP3 Security Update.”

I paid Billy and his Redmond Rascals once for their XP/IE bug-ware. So paying them a subscription fee to give me what I should have gotten when I paid for their MS Copyrighted Win XP/IE Zeros & Ones is to me DOUBLE-PAY.

Keep the good V & SA stuff coming…you’re doing a great job. JP

Microsoft Antispyware

by liamhyland - 1/12/05 1:42 PM In reply to: MS AntiSpyware vs Ad-Aware vs SpyBot by Donna Buenaventura Moderator

Donna,
I downloaded this antispyware today, anxiously as it is a beta version, and since I had stuff from Kazza on my system that I could not get rid of I took a leap of faith with it.
It went ploughing though my system, and found over 8000 pieces of spyware, mostly from kazza stuff, and I was able to get rid of it, though some parts of that spyware programme is still in the system but add/remove will not/did not remove. I am tempted to use a remover called 'kazzabegone' but unsure of the consequneces regarding connections to the internet getting lost. Thanks for the discussion. Liam

From what I understand kazzabegone really works. You can get if from Merlin BUT make sure you also download the LSPFix tool BEFORE you run the kazzabegone tool. You can get both of them here at the bottom of this page. The link for the LSPfix in also there too. Make sure you follow ALL of Merlin's directions before you use either tool.
