The Compaq V2000 is a sister to the HP DV1000 just as the HPZT3000 is a sister to the Compaq X1000.

I would buy the HPDV1000 over the Compaq V2000 as only the HP has the remote control I think and some other minor features that the Compaq does not have for less than $100 less.

There is no material difference between the Compaq X1000 and HPZT3000 except for color inside the notebook so you should shop both for price and color preference.

You can get things at hpshopping like a multiformat DVD burner and internal bluetooth that many retail models don't even offer so check pricing at hpshopping.

See X1000forums.com for all the best specs and pricing and you can do a search for the DV1000 and find its own dedicated website (which is newer and I don't know it offhand).

The new HP DV1000 (just introduced in September) does everything well but play higher end games as it has shared video memory only. It is 5.5 pounds due to a unique 14" widescreen LCD that I have not seen elsewhere. It has DVD/CD functions with the operating system off and 2 headphone jacks in front for the airplane or car (and you should get more battery life using these functions with Windows off). You also have a built in remote control in the PC card slot. Keep in mind that web pages that don't stretch like spreadsheets or other programs (that will fill the largest possible square but will leave a space on the side) will only be about 13" square.

The Compaq X1000/HPZT3000 I have (Compaq is half silver/half black inside -- HP is all black inside --both have silver aluminum LCD lid on the outside) has been out since mid 2003 but it has been upgraded several times. It has the 15.4" LCD that is very popular (and will show a 14" square web page image when it will not stretch). It has up to 64mb dedicated video with the ATI 9200 video card. That is adequate for many higher end games like Doom 3 on reduced settings.

If you are a serious gamer you should get the ATI 9700 with 128mb dedicated RAM on the Dell 8600 or Acer 2025 but the Dell his heavier and thicker and doesn't have as nice a keyboard (or case integrity) and the Acer is a great option but not custom order and also will cost you close to $2,000.

So, if you want to be under 6 pounds, can live with a 14" widescreen and want a more portable notebook for transport get the HPDV1000 (and also if you value the remote and CD/DVD functions alot.

If you prefer the 15.4" widescreen and the benefits of the larger area inside the notebook (due to the widescreen being wider) and you want dedicated video RAM consider the Compaq X1000/HPZT3000 (see X1000forums.com) or Dell 8600 or Toshiba M30/M35 but many don't have dedicated RAM on these.

The X1000/ZT3000 is 6.5 pounds and will still fit in a
Targus 15" notebook backpack easily (it goes in sideways not top to bottom).

If this will be your only computer and portability is not your highest priority I would want the Dedicated video and larger LCD of the X1000/ZT3000.

But if you have a desktop at home and want the portability and also like the DVD/CD functions and remote than get the DV1000 (but you will have to forego some games).

DV1000 is extremely popular (I love mine); lightweight, dvd w/remote, centrino, but may not be for you if you're huge into video games (integrated Intel video card). However, otherwise you will not be disappointed. I have the DV1040us and haven't regretted buying it for a second.

Chevetter:

I guess the only thing I am wondering about the DV1000 with the 14" widscreen (which is unique and a very slick size) is does the size of the square webpages (that don't stretch to widescreen when internet surfing) bother you? I assume you are viewing about a 13" square image when that happens.

On my Compaq X1000 (15.4" widescreen which is the more mainstream size) I get about a 14" square image so that is fine for me.

If that size if fine there is no reason not to buy the HP DV1000 unless you know you want dedicated video RAM and you pick up the instant on DVD/CD and the remote control....

Have you noticed screen problems when viewing at an angle? www.notebookreview.com gave this a pretty critical negative. How is burning DVDs? Is there any problem that you see? Some have claimed the latch to be flimsy do you find that to be true?

Case stability of notebooks under 5.5 pounds is less

by KenSanramon - 1/4/05 10:57 AM In reply to: DV1040US by titaniummd

I have the Compaq X1000 (HPZT3000 is its sister). This has the 15.4" notebook at 6.5 pounds. This notebooks has an aluminum lid for LCD stability as well as a metal bezel surrounding the LCD on the inside.

So, yes, the HPDV1000 at 5.3 pounds does not have the case stability that the notebook above or other notebooks in the 6-7 pound range have.

But you trading off this for a lighter weight (5.3 pounds). An Apple Ibook does not have the strong case of the Apple Powerbooks either.
