hi, i have an ibm p4 laptop with windows xp professional sp2. it has been freezing up randomly for the past few weeks, usually 5 or 6 times a night and i have to keep turning off my computer and rebooting. i've tried a variety of different downloads to see if i could identify the problem, including 'system mechanic' and 'diskeeper 9 pro' but my computer still freezes up.
i've also tried running a various tests but everything passes. there is no record of the freezes in my event viewer. i'm considering wiping my hard drive and reloading everything, but would prefer not to do this.
is there anything i can try to figure out what is going on?
thanks
1. No spyware.
2. Keep the machine cool.
3. All updates from IBM.com (drivers, BIOS, etc.)
4. If you use Internet Explorer, see item 1 repeatedly.
Bob
Thanks Bob, I have spyware software and anti-virus software, i updated my bios and drivers recently (after loading SP2) and i rarely use IE. I either use aol (ugh!) or MSN. also, given the temperature of my apartment, i don't think that overheating is an issue.
Or still has some pest that your scans don't reveal. Post a Hijackthis log so I can see it all.
What's that? -> http://www.help2go.com/modules.php?name=HJTDetective is a free analyser (don't delete until you ask around) and http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php has the program to make the log file.
I’d try something other than IE, AOL, or MSN — none of which are great security-wise. I suggest Mozilla Firefox (http://www.getfirefox.com), or a similar substitute (Avant Browser, SlimBrowser, etc.) They’re much better in handling online security (ex. Firefox doesn’t work with ActiveX scripts) than any of the three browsers you named. There have been many doubts about Firefox because of reported incompatibility with webpages (ex. MSN.com’s Entertainment section, with videos, doesn’t load except in IE), but one plugin (of the myriad available) adds an option to your right-click menu: “View This Page in IE”, if necessary.
