I was wondering if there is a way to boot into a DOS command prompt in Windows XP Home (SP2), perhaps with a boot disk. My problem is that I have some files on my computer that I simply can’t get rid of — they’re pieces of spyware that automatically starts up when I start my computer. I am unable to delete them because they’re in use, and that happened even when I booted into Safe Mode. I figure the only way I can get them off my computer is to boot into some sort of command prompt (yes, I’m aware that Microsoft took DOS out of Windows XP), unless anyone knows of any programs that will allow me to delete a file that’s in use.
If you know those files names and want to get rid of them, try MoveOnBoot.
As for your questions regarding a bootable method:
- Such as recovery console prompt, you can either use windows XP CD or download the bootable diskettes from Bootdisk. You have a limited accessibility to files and folders unless you don't prepare a couple of registry entries. This was discussed and the procedure were provided, even in the case when you don't have a bootable windows XP (worse than your case).
- using a bootable CD. These were also posted hundreds of times. Just search the forums for bootable cd. You'll find several solutions.
