Windows XP: clearing arp cache failure
clearing arp cache failure

2600+ AthlonXP
512 megs ram
nforce2 mainboard (not using onboard nic)
comcast cable internet - connected direct (no router)
Recently this problem started.
After booting up, cannot access internet.
I get an IP address, dns server numbers etc.)
but IE and firefox cannot reach websites.
If I go to device manager and uninstall the NIC driver (Dlink 530TX+) and then do a check for hardware changes, the system installs the driver and the internet works.
If I go to network connections and do a repair on the
network connection I get an error everytime.
" Windows Could not finish repairing the problem because the following operation could not be completed:
Clearing the ARP cache
for assistance, contact the person who manages your network "
Have tried winsockfix several times and no success.
Have used the standard cleanup suite, adaware - spybot - hijackthis - cwshredder
and found nothing but dcom and tracking cookies.
Antivirus scan "housecall" negative as well.
Ideas to try?

I did that and it cleared with no errors.
Then I go directly to network connections and
have windows do it, I get the same error.
Think a repair install might fix this or is that just a waste of time?

I uninstalled the last couple windows xp patches which were installed 12/16/04. The last time I remember having access to the internet, I was uninstalling google desktop search. Could this be the reason? I am able to set the lan connection to manual and browse my local network, but no internet access. PC refuses to automatically update the ip address for my desktop.

I followed the instructions on the MS website.

Just before the last restart, I typed "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" in the command prompt. This supposedly rebuilds the TCP/IP stack. Everything is back to normal.
I blame google for this. In the registry key following the winsock entry, there is a google desktop search "backup winsock" entry. Damn beta software!

However, it's better to open a new thread and describe in more detail what is your PC's configuration and give other pertinent details.
Now, instead of using the netsh , try the WinsockFix utility.

After I receive the same message as mentioned above, I can then access a web page. Have ran 3 different virus scanners, adaware, spybot, cw shredder, tweaknow regcleaner....all with no success. I have also tried doing the fix that was used above from Microsoft, with no success.
Any other ideas???
