Yes, It's basically the next generation of AV, works pro actively by means of Intelligent Malicious Code Detection, interface still needs some work but the technology is sound...
Don't trust in only one antivirus. One must be active, but it's a good ideea to have more than one antivirus. I use EZArmor (I've buyed it after the free version has expired) because it has firewall, AVG 7 free and AVP free (Antivir-personal - it seems that know only to delete the infected files, not to heal its). I've used some time ago Avast free too. But I use too Pop3scan Mailbox (more informations here http://support.serv.ch/mail/pop3/clients/pop3scan/README.txt ), a free software to check the messages on the server. So, you can delete them before reach your computer. Another free software to see your messages on the server is Mail Box Dispatcher 2 ( http://www.anti-spam-tools.com/?ref=TrayPopMenu ). Both let you see the e-mail in text format and what kind of attachement is. If you receive an attachement with two extension (like blahblah.txt.jpg) don't even think to open it! It's 100% sure that is a virus even your antivirus software don't detect it. And don't forget to install all the patches for your OS (I supposed Windows).
Please excuse my English.
Since Windows SP2 came out, I had lots of problems with my Norton 2004 Internet Security and therefore I went to buy the 2005, again; it did not work out. I then tried the Trend Micro PC-Cillian Internet Security; again, it did not work out. Obviously Microsoft had put a lot of effort in the SP2 on the security issue and therefore I believe that the built-in firewall of SP2 is good enough. What we need is the Anti-Virus protection as this is in the agenda of the SP2 " Security Centre". F-Prot is good and it gives you 30 days to test-drive it. US$ 29.00 for one year subscription. Go to www.f-prot.com You will be amazed that people in Iceland do have something good for Windows XP SP2.
Does your f-prot actually detect virusses? It is installed where I work, and normally get a virus warning after the system is infected, or the system starts to dis-behave, then they install a patch to detect the virus...not good.
Any anti viriussoftware at all is ALWAYS better then no antivirus software at all.
I myself use Norton at this moment and last year i had Mcaffee.
In between i used a free anti virus program which is one of the best free versions namely: Avast home edition antivirus.
This one is as good as a lot of the ones you have to pay for, you get even free updates!
If you buy one cheque first with your family and friends which one they use and if they are content with their A.V.software.
Cheque on the internet on the sites of some A.V. producers for more info and prices. Then download your free version or buy your A.V. software in a store or on the internet-store you can trust.
Beware for illegal software (you can be traced by justice) or software that is sold very cheaply by dodgy people (when you have payd, your money is disapeared and untraceable).
Note: No anti-virus maker can garantee that you nčver will be hit by any virus at all.
In combination with A.V.you have to use a firewall.
Use the one with comes with the latest updates of Windows or search for a good and/or free version; here too ask your family etc.
ANOTHER GOOD TIP: avoid 'free' pornsites and other sites you don't know and never click on a 'link' you don't trust.
www.grisoft.com has its free edition of AVG which works very well.also visiting www.mrbass.org has links to several others such as antixp which i feel is the best.
http://www.avast.com << Avast
http://www.grisoft.com << AVG
http://www.clamwin.org << ClamWin
There's others I couldn't find at the moment but avast is really good, haven't tried clamwin yet looks good.
www.grisoft.com
neither free nor purchased protection
(in life and in the web)
is 100% attack free proof:
avast is pretty close. GO AVAST, GO!
I fall back on my old reliable website: www.infostar.com.
They have a page where they list all kinds of AV software,
most or all of it, free.
I have tried AVG, Bitware and Avast. I use Bitware along with ZoneLabs Security Suite. I have installed AVG on my mother's computer. No particular reason for these choices
except that they are all European programs and I think MAYBE they bring a different slant to AV. I have had Bitware flag a virus that Norton missed.
While you are on InfoStar, leave Peter a small gratuity for posting and maintaining his website.
AVG is a great free anti-virus software
www.free-av.com is where to find it.
free anti virus software with anti virus system guardian. very good program has internal internet update option in tools menu. guard can be enabled and disabled from task bar or in the program options.
Dear Fiddler,
I just recently got a worm despite the firewall and antiviral packages provided by my ISP. I changed to free services, which for the last couple of days seemed to have worked fine, and eliminated the viris to boot. The free antiviral is called AVG free edition, while the firewall is Sysgate personal firewall.
AVG has been free for quite a while, has free virus data file updates and upgrades from time to time. the Sysgate is new to me, so I don't know how long it will be gratis.
They are out there, even if just trial versions, but make sure you read up on them and reviews, before you put your trusted data in their hands--sometimes no protection could be better.
Alesandros
avast has a free version for Home users, it updates automaticly, you are required to register by email, it works great, doesnt bog down my system like Mcafee and Norton... I install it on all custom PC's I build, here is a link http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html
