In WinXP Excel 2002 SP3 when I click tools, options it does not allow me to access the "tabs".
A message displays saying "cannot access directory" C:\'foldername.filename'. This only occurs with the excel program.
runing a Dell 4550 P4 2.66 with 512ram
Thank you.
Which folder name and filename is it trying to access?

Thanks for helping out,
In C:\ drive, a folder named oldfiles\oldjob
I have reinstalled/repaired the program and it does not fix it. MS Word, access.powerpoint do not have this problem.
Sorry for the delay getting back to you.
If I read you correctly, you should have a folder on your C drive called "oldfiles", and inside that folder a file called "oldjob".
I think you need to check whether that file and that folder still exists.
Do you know how to use Windows Explorer? (Note I don't mean Internet Explorer).
RIght click My Computer and click Explore. Highlight the C drive, and click the little + sign next to it. A list of folders should display under the C drive. Is your "old" folder listed there? If so, highlight the folder and see if your file "oldjob" is listed in the right hand pane.
If not, then the folder has been moved or deleted.
Reading your original post again, I am confused. When you say in Excel you click Tools > Options and you cannot click any tabs, are the tabs visible?
Also, I don't know why Excel would search for a folder named oldfiles and/or a file named oldjob. That seems to me to suggest that a setting has been changed somwhere, perhaps under the General tab, default file location.
Very strange.
Let me know how you get on.
Mark
thanks again for taking the time.
Ok, here's the deal. in excel, when you click on tools, options and try to click on one of the options tabs I get:
Cannot access 'C:\mlrs files.'
the tabs are visible and that specific folder is in C:\ and in my documents.
like you stated, none of the tabs can be clicked on including the "general tab' or the save file location tab.
am about ready to call the geniuses at MS.
I'm sorry for the delay.
I can't offer a proper solution. I checked on Microsoft's Knowledge Base and could not find anything that resembled your problem.
Do you have the Microsoft Office CD?
If so, you may want to consider reinstaling Excel.
Or, if you don't have the original CD, Office 2003, Office XP, and Office 2000 provide the Detect and Repair command. You can find the Detect and Repair command on the Help menu of almost all Office programs. Using this command corrects identifiable problems such as missing files, corrupt files, registry omissions, or damaged registry entries. It replaces some files they were deleted, damaged, or is the wrong version. But using the Detect and Repair command usually requires you to provide the installation CD for the version of Office currently installed on your computer.
Again, good luck
Mark
