For some reason, each time I press ctrl+alt+del to go into the taskmanager (or even when I run 'taskmgr'), it appears and then disappears when I move the mouse over it. The same occurs with the tray icon. Please help as this is really starting to annoy me. I'm the kind of person that always needs to know what processes are running so its beginning to worry me.
This problem started shortly after doing a clean install of windows (after zero-filling the harddrive).
Any help appreciated
I have the exact same problem did you find a fix....
Try the following:
Recent reports show that a trojan file named NETSTATT.EXE running at the background causes MSCONFIG, TASK MANAGER AND REGEDIT windows to terminate.
Steps to be performed:
1. Rename Taskmgr.exe and run it. Try to terminate NETSTATT.EXE. Or, acquire Process Explorer and terminate the running process NETSTATT.EXE. XP Pro users can use Taskkill. Type Taskkill /? at Command Prompt for more details to terminate a process.
Note: Make sure that you rename them to a completely different name (so that the filename does not contain the string "Task", "Regedit", "MSConfig". Why? See W32.Erkez.B@mm
2. Acquire HijackThis and run a scan. Fix NETSTATT.EXE entries from Startup
(Caution: It may load from 2 or more locations)
The startup entry title might be misleading (as if it is related to Yahoo Messenger, but not actually), see : http://www.computercops.biz/postp224961.html. Delete all occurrences of NETSTATT.EXE using HijackThis
XP Pro users can get the Tasks list by running the command Tasklist /M >C:\Tasks.txt and then open C:\Tasks.txt in NotePad to inspect the contents.

I recommend that you update your virus definitions and run a full virus scan. The link below may be of some help.

Has "Group Policies" been used and the use of WTM been circumvented on your system as explained in this link, or perhaps the "fix" described on the DougKnox site that can be downloaded and used?
