Is there a difference in the blank media between the DVD- and the DVD+? I've noticed the prices for the blanks are different, but can you burn a blank - in the + format? Every time I ask this question I get a description of the formats and not the blanks. ( I want to know if I can buy the less expensive DVDs for all my burning needs)
No. +/- discs use different chemical combinations on the recordable side. If you have a +R only burner, you won't be able to read -R/RW or +RW, and vise versa.
If you've got a burner that can handle both +/- then you're fine with whatever you buy.
Yes. Just like CDR/W, you'll find cheap DVD media with little protection for the recording surface and some media will almost be transparent. This is not a bad thing, but there will be some differences out there.
Bottomline? Test a pack and see if it works for you.

You made an odd comment. DVD-RW media will cost more than DVD-R media, but DVD+ and - of the same brand will cost the same price. Of course, better quality media will cost more than cheap quality media. Still, there is no
price difference between the two formats given that all other factors are the same. chuck
I didn't grind the words that finely.
And I can comment that where I shop, DVD-R and DVD+R of the same make are the same price. Nothing dictates this to be true in an open market.
As to RW media, I noted only CDR/W as meaning that much like in the CD recordable market of CDR and CDRW that DVD recordable media (which includes all types) will find a wide selection of price and "quality".
The quality factor is very hard to pin down, but the lowest price "CAKE BOX" packages which we use by the carload for demo disks are definitely more fragile. They can be destroyed with ease with a fingernail.
Hope this clarifies my short reply,
Bob
