Cannot Access Google

by FrankG - 12/3/04 4:16 PM

MSN is my home page and in the address bar I type: www.google.com and press enter; all I get is a blank screen with no access to google. I was able to get to google through msn search bar, however when I try to add google as a favorite it says it is already there, which it is not, and then I get an error message that says it was unable creat it. I was able to access google 2 days ago and it was also listed as a favorite and it no longer appears with my other favorites. I am able to go to other web sites. I run adaware, spybot s & d, always cleat cookies, temp internet files, history and run nortin antivirus.

Any suggestions????

Am I correct in understanding that you have a utility called "Always clean cookies"?

If so it occurs to me that you may be deleting cookies you need.

Try this:

Put Google in "favourites" again (my wife, for some reason, won't use IE where Google has the toolbar and so uses "favourites" in MSN for access).

Before shuting down, open Spybot S&D in advanced mode, then open "cookies", go through the list and transfer those you want to keep to the save list.

There are other ways to do this, but that is the simplest I have found ... and it might solve your problem.

No you are not correct. What I meant about deleting cookies was; through IE tools internet options, delete cookies and internet files.

Doesn't make sense that I can access every other web site and not google.

Hi Frank
I don't know too much about this type of problem but I'm assuming that it might have something to do with the hosts file which I do not know enough about to give you advice on so hopefully someone else more knowledgable will be able to help. Sorry.

I just set up Google Mail and I, too, had problems linking to the home page and even other places that I needed to go to to complete the set up. When I tried to link to another part of Google to continue the set up process I did notice that a new URL appeared but the page was blank. So I manually entered the link URL and then I connected. I will admit this was a confusing time for me. I just opened the links manually....omitting the last part of the URL that contained a long list of characters. Something is not working correctly here at all in my opinion. I would at least allow cookies to be set....in other words, do not block cookies when venturing into Google. Go to https://gmail.google.com and see if you can get started there. Remember this is https, not http

Over here there is no problem accessing Google.com and https://gmail.google.com/. It's loading normal in IE and Firefox.

@FrankG,

Check the host if it has been altered.
Use hoster from http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip to view your Host file.

Check for suspicious entry. If there is suspicious entry, use Hoster to restore original host.

Or you might want repair your IE.

Same thing is happening to me

by kmuscott - 12/24/04 1:53 PM In reply to: Cannot Access Google by FrankG

The same thing is happening to me. I cannot access google or yahoo. I keep getting the "We can't find "www.google.com" ". The page seems to be trying to impersonate msn.com but when I scroll my mouse over a link it tells me that it is "http://search.findwhatevernow.com/". If you find a solution for this please let me know. Thanks

I would try the usual tools first such as Ad-Aware SE, Spybot S&D and Cwshredder but I think you are going to have to use HijackThis for this problem if the others don't take care of it. I'm going to supply you with some links but do NOT try to fix this yourself. HijackThis is dangerous if not used correctly. Download it so you have it and then go to one of the 3 forums that are among the ones that handle these logs. Make sure you follow the directions at whichever forum you choose or they will not help you. They will tell you how to create a log and where to post it. If you need links for the first 3 that I mentioned, I will get them for you. The rest of this is for HijackThis. The HijackThis Forums are ALWAYS busy so you have to patient, not to mention that it is Christmas Eve. Good luck.

Problem is in extra DNS entries in Network

by arnostienen - 1/22/05 11:13 AM In reply to: Hi kmuscott by roddy32 Moderator

I had the same problem, but eventually discovered a malware program had entered two extra DNS addresses for my network adapter.

Go to "Control Panel" > "Network Connections" > right-mouse click on your adapter > "Properties" > "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" > "Properties" > "Advanced" > remove the top two additional "Default Gateways" which were added by the malware.

Just a thought

Its strange, more and more people have same problem with MSN, Google and Yahoo on Win XP.

A few months back, I'm unable to search using Google, Yahoo and MSN, I can not click some link in Yahoo, MSN or google...

There are no cured available, so I reinstall windows (clean installed) ...

Before installing anything else... Just windows XP pro, I cannot click (atleast) one of the link in msn.com home.. (if I'm not mistaken its the AUTO link, on the left coloumn)...

Since everything else is working, I ignore the problem (for now)...

Checked with Online scan, NAV (and tried AVG7 free ed.) using Adaware, Spybot SD, Spywareblaster... run CWShreder, Hijackthis . found nothing bad that should be fix... (Yes, all with the latest update)

Someone said it has something to do with Java(?).. I don't know..

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year...
