I have windows xp on both my laptop and desktop and when i enable the firewall in xp I can no longer share files on these two computers in my home. Will I have the same problem with ZA?
As far as I know, from my old version I don't think it will interfere with the computers on a local network.
I've had it on both my wifes and mine computer and we could share files, folders and printers on our computers.
Hope this helps, Rick
for further contact go to http://www.rickswebfactory.com and use my contact forms, I get 'em all to read anyway.
I would recommend the best of both worlds: Download ZoneAlarm Pro for the free test period (15 days?), and let it automatically configure itself to your machine. Then you can just decline to pay for it, and be downgraded to the Free version - but it's already configured to your computer.
I tried ZA Pro and found it was informing me of every change to the register -- always a pop-up. It drove me crazy and I went back to ZA Free. As far as I can see it is just as good. It is nice to know about changes to the register, but it was a bit much. Fred
The main advantage to the Pro version is that you get AdWatch with it. AdWatch is an active adware blocker to keep it off your computer and prevent registery hacking. You still need to scan with AdAware once and awhile, but it is another layer of protection.
If you want to avoid adware, use FireFox instead of IE.
Also, you should be running the free program SpyBlaster at www.javacoolsoftware.com It works off a database connected to their server and provides automatic updates. I would not run a computer without it.
I personally found ZoneAlarmPro to be horrible. There's a bad DLL file that caused my entire PC to slow down and drag. It would take forever to boot up.
I had to revert to ZoneAlarm. The main feature I wanted out of ZAP was a WhoIS lookup, but that was overrated as I soon found out; so anyway, from my perspective, go with the free version. It's very stable!
I have had ZoneAlarm Pro for several years. I find it does everything advertised and most importantly it keeps my computers free of virus' and trojans. I had the free version for quite a while and when the pro version came out I bought it if nothing else to pay for what I consider the best software purchase I have made. I upgraded to XP when it came out and used their firewall for two months and got several virus' for doing so. I put ZoneAlarm Pro back on and have been virus' free ever since. It is a small price to pay to keep clean. I don't mind paying for good software and this is one of them.
.
In general: Would not have a PC connected to internet without Zone Alarm (alway on), Ad-Aware (run daily) & SpyBot Search & Destroy (keep imunized and also run weekly)!!
Free version of ZA has worked fine for several years, but I decided to get 'Pro' mostly in order to support its' development staff. I did not want to go thru hassle for paypal, etc, so bought at Best Buy for $10 (after rebates) last month.
Without some support, these folks may quit improving these products & the price is very reasonable for what you get.
If you are happily continuing using freeware versions of these (or other great products) remember to kick into the developers 'tip jar' to encourage them!
I like freeware and believe it is a great way to 'test drive' a product for a while, but many folks see it only as a totally free ride. The developers need support though ... ie: how many servers do they have to have just so freebee end-users can get updates?

A lot of (perceived) ZA Pro problems could be avoided with a glance at the directions and an adjustment of settings. For example, pop up alerts can be set to announce all attempts, announce only the dangerous ones, or announce none but log them. BTW, my computer does not exist - I had ZA Pro set all ports in a stealth mode.
When I upgraded to the 5.0 Version of Zone Alarm Pro, I could not run the scandisk on my pc. I found out from an OEM that he has had many of his customers with the same problem. I had to reload 4.5 so I could run scandisk.
I have P4 with a 3Gig Prescott chip, 512mg of ram and an ASUS motherboard with an 800 FSB.
Bought the Pro version and regretted it even on sale. The privacy options are too intrusive and create needless complications on multiple sites. Regarding the e-mail attachment quarantine feature, leave it to your AV program.
Save your money.
I used ZoneAlarm free version for years and loved it so I thought the least I could do was to pay for the pro version. I did that only to find that payment is only for one year following which I was pestered by pop up notices everytime ZoneAlarm started up. It still worked fine but it was annoying and I couldn't stop it or revert back to the free version. I finally gave up and bought McAfee firewall. I figure if I am going to be pestered I might as well check out the competition. I do like ZoneAlarm best however and may go back to the pro version in a year or so. I might also check out Symantec as I am using their virus protection.
ZA Pro allows you to block specific UDP and TCP ports, and it can also be set to not respond to ICMP pings. It also has the function to block IPs, which therefore makes your computer "invisible" to the GENERAL hacker community.
So yes, if you know which ports/ip's to block, it DOES offer better protection.
