I have used norton anti-virus and internet security for several years. As part of my regular maintenance i update regularly, and occasionally avail myself of their on-line virus and security checks. it has been my experience that by doing this my machine has remained secure. However, i believe that the risks involved to an individual PC are determined by more than just the choice of defensive software. we all need to look closely at our web-surfing activities and be aware of those areas where danger may lurk. Also, e-mail. delete any e-mail that is suspicious or vague in subject matter or indiscriminate address. do not, I repeat. do not open it! and do not forward this type of thing to your friends. it may not be a friendly thing to do! I'm not trying to say any product here is better than any other. but a little common sense and regular maintenance can lead to a trouble free virtual experience. it has for me!
and in closing, a regular scan with a spyware program such as spy-bot (again, do the updates regularly) and all should be well.
have a great thanksgiving

I read reviews mostly, as I did 4 years ago concerning Norton Symantec... and spent 3 happy years in their company...well, happy except for the ongoing progressive increase I noticed in its use of system resources that is...in Feb 04, I was refused updates by Symantec... My sub had until August 04 to run...no matter who I spoke to or what I tried, I could not get Norton 2003 Internet Security, which was my current program at the time updated, I was offered no explanation except that I didn't appear to be in their data base... so, I read further reviews and plumped for AVG 7.00 Network Configuration Version.. and find it excelent...My machines are on-line 24/7, I have much more system resources at my disposal and not had one hit in the 9 months I have been using it...so all in all at what amounts to £12.00 per year for the sub, I am very happy chappie...

I decide on selecting antivirus by first checking to see if it is ICSA certified, than I check forums to see what problems may exist with different OS. I also check the gripes site to see if there is anything posted there. If it passes certification is fairly priced with few problems than I chose it. I may change Antivirus after a year if there is something better that gives better protection.

Actually, my decision of the antivirus software is based on the following:
- My past experiences with Symantec (previously Norton)have been A++. I also prefer this because the updates are faster when a virus makes presence, particularly on the WWW; updates are automatic, and it works excellent with infected e-mails. I buy it in the SystemWorks package along with other three apps: CleanSweep, Ghost and Utilities. Overall, I have made SystemWorks as the #1 antivirus on my PC.

I picked Other because when I ran win98 se I used Norton Antivirus and had some conflicts with it.
When I went to Win xp I decided to give McAfee a try and have been using it and its firewall without any problems.

I am a personal home user, so looked out for a free anti-virus. Found avast! to be free (for home users) updates automatically available and does not eat up too many resources.

I don't use AV and my computer is safe

by gopherbyrd - 11/20/04 9:21 AM In reply to: 11/19/04 How do you decide which antivirus software to use? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I run Linux on both of my personal computers. I keep my boxes up to date and do not run as root (that's admin for you windows folks). The Linux/Unix/MacOSX security model beats windows hands down making attacks very hard to be sucessful. Are *nix OS's perfect? Nope, you still need to take precautions, but it is less likely a *nix box will get infected.

If you use XP create a separate user and only run as that user and do not give that user admin privledges. Use admin sparingly, only when you need to and log back in as your non-admin user when finished. Windows users need to run AV, spyware blockers, and firewall. Which ones I could not tell you. Research the various choices and do not rely on any one research source for your answers.

IMHO the best AV choice is to get rid of windows, and use a more secure OS such as Linux or Mac.

I have stopped using Symantec's software after frustration with problems and lack of tech support. After a year using McAfee then having problems I switched to Trend Micro's PC-cillin which is half the price. It also does not hog system resources and is faster and easier to use.

I chose Others. About two years ago I was suckered into clicking on an enclosure that turned out to be a virus. I had Norton AV installed. It detected the virus and claimed it eliminated. When I booted up again, it was back. I tried MacAfee and PCciliin. Both detected and reported correction, but with reboot the virus was back. I tried Computer Associates EZ trust AV. It found the virus and killed it, absolutely. I have used it eversince and have never again been troubled. I wouldn't consider any alternative, even though it is seldom included in reviews of available and recommended AV software.

I did have McAfee up until 4 weeks ago when I got hit hard by a nasty virus. To make a long story short ended up having to reformat my main C drive. I now have Norton and Sygate as my firewall and they have been holding up well. McAffee seems to be in it more for the money than protecting my system.
Plus XP and Device Drivers have been a major pain and night mare. Go to the OEM and they don't have drivers for XP. Go to MS and they don't have specific drivers either! Yet, even after loading Service Pack 2, I have several devices that boot up and ask for the driver to be installed! Maddening!

I go for the cheapest! However, this at present for me is Computer Associates eTrust ezAntivirus, which I consider a good bargain, and I have witnessed elsewhere picked up and prevented some nasties getting through.

Howdy all, I choose my AV by reading all available articles on the subject of computer security, referring to others and finding out what they use and checking with local computer shops to see what they recommend. I decided firstly on Nortons, which I found too slow and resource hungry then changed to NOD32 which I found perfect for my needs and easy to configure.:)

I decide by what works, I have had Inoculate, Vet, E Trust Amour, Mcafee & Nortons Antivirus, Nortons Proffessional Internet Security Pack & F-Secure all full versions

I have also had free versions of AVG 6 & AntiVir Personal.

Out of all of these I have had the best results from AntiVir as it has picked up viruses that Programs such as the No 1 rated by PC People magazine F-secure & others such as Nortons I.S.P have not detected.

The only down fall that I can find with AntiVir is it is a bit confusing for the less computer minded person.

Sincerely
