IMPO, the best way to not only get rid of IE, but also M$ is to not use Windows! Linux is fine, but unless you are ready to get to know your OS intimately (and I mean "intimately" as in "you will practivcally have to BECOME the OS to fully appreciate it"), then the only logical alternative is to get a Macintosh running OS X. Mac OS X is basically UNIX--which Linux is based on--with a graphical overlay that allows John/Jane User to actually use the OS without becoming "absorbed" by it. It is SAFER, MORE SECURE, EASIER and is ATTCKED LESS OFTEN by malicious computing (Viri, Worms, Spyware, Adware, Hacking, etc.). You can use Firefox, Netscape, or even IE for Macintosh if you need to and watch as you surf and when the ads come and malicious scripts are attempting to be run, they FAIL because they target Windows which you are not using! OS X has available to it M$ Office (minus the Access Database Application) which is fully compatible with the Windows' version of the same name. Any document created with Word for OS X (now up to Micro$oft Office 2004) will be able to be opened and used transparently on a Windows machine using Word of any version from Office 97 on. This is also true for Excel and Powerpoint.
So, if you are so concerned about IE making it easier for your system to be compromised and if M$ is going to force you to keep an ailing browser riddled with security flaws by tieing into its core OS, I say move on to something better for your safety. GET A MAC!

I have been using Madrake Linux 10.0 for some time now and I am finding that I can do upgrades, software installations, etc. without learning command line instructions. The biggest drawback is simply that a lot of software is written for Windows and not Linux. There are ,however, Linux equivalents of a lot of popular Windows software and much of it is free instead of costing $100's.

Don't delete IE. You will need it for windows updates.
Just take it off your desktop.

Internet Explorer should be listed there - just uncheck the box and then click OK and let Windows uninstall Internet Explorer.

The question is why you want to de-install the IE.
Very few IE's other than MS, ask for de-installation of MS-IE. The best of them enhance the MS-IE.
Take Mozilla, or better (but it costs) SIE/PIE and simply ignore the Windows IE when browsing.
Try the SIE (winferno.com or secureie.com).
It cost a bit, but you may get exactly what you want.
The "google" and "yahoo" bars are NOT a replacement as many people think. They are "enhancements" and you can install them parallel to the Sie, or even without, if you want to be overloaded with Pop-Ups and Flashes and without Active X Control.
The SIE/PIE lets YOU control the Pop-Ups, Flashes and ActiveX.
If you only want Google, that is your choice, but it will not work w/o W/IE in the way you may want it.
If you really want to de-install the MS-IE, you can do so by running "Search" about 50 x, before you have a catalog of the individual File Designations etc.etc.
It isd silly to de-install a part of the OS.
It is much better to enhance that part, and for the IE there are many choices.

You don't remove EI from your 'puter or HD. It is needed for things like ''WINDOW'S UPDATE''!
This is the only browser that your Opreating Sys will use.
The best way of not using EI is to removeit from your desktop and quick launch area. In otherwords just simply ignore it, but when needed: Win update, MSN messenger... The sys will launch it by default and shut it down when finished.
