Uhh, did I mention I use McAfee Internet Security Suite?
Michael,
If the article that I read yesterday is correct, in the very near future you will not need ANY spyware/adware utilities! This is because McAfee has announced that they are adding this protection to their internet security suite. The article stated that Symantec, (makers of Norton Antivirus) would most likely be following suit since both companies have been deluged with requests! The vast majority of internet users use one of these company's products for virus protection so chances are pretty good that you will find this protection in your current product after the next version update.
I use Nortons and I thought that it already had the ability to do that. But I find it doesn't do as good a job as specialty programs so I turned it off. Besides Firefox and other good habits prevent them from getting on your system in the first place so that they don't have to be removed. This is analogous to deleting viruses from the isp before you download them so your av program has nothing to do.

After the invasion of ATLEvents.ATLEvents through IE, I figure you can never have enough spyware tools. Spybot found it, but could not remove it. Hijackthis saw it too, but as soon as it fixed it, it returned. It's tenacles resided in the registry, in Windows Prefetch, in Windows system32, and in the Local Settings Temp file. I was able to rename the intrusive offender by running the win xp setup disk and going into the repair console, and only then could I delete the program. But, what a hassle! The regc.exe program would phone home every 10 seconds and use up to 90% of my cpu processor to do it! Everything else slowed to a crawl. Speaking of slow... I now use the two resident programs that Spybot installs, sdhelper and teatimer, with all the blocking they do while I search my pages take much longer to load, but hopefully they will keep that little devil OUT!
Why don't you try Firefox?
Michael F
I myself rely on Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D. SpyBot's immunization is an excellent feature. I'd also recommend SpywareBlaster from JavaCool Software to further immunize your system.
When the cleaning's done, I use CCleaner to tidy up the registry.
Howdy! Could you tell me exactly how to easily extract the begin2search crap off of my PC. I have switched to firefox as my browser and it is not affecting me anymore there but i don't want the spying possibilities. Any help you could give would be appreciated.
Have you tried adaware and spybot? If you have and they don't get rid of it then try starting in safe mode (press F8 as your computer starts up) as this prevents programs from starting automatically but you can still run adaware. If that does not work try cwshredder (do a search for it) as this can remove some persistent adware.
Michael F
CNET's recommendation that Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy are enough is obviously not correct, because Spybot's program admits it is not enough and advises the user to supplement its protection with JavaCool's Spyware Blaster.
There are many answers to every question but my recommendation was not to only use spybot but to supplement it with adaware and the excellent protection of firefox, as most vulnerabilities that allow these to happen are due to IE.

I have installed and run Pest Patrol for the past month and have had NO new spyware detected when running Ad aware. It seems to work well.
Hi Mike , I agree 100% with what you say , but I am a freebie Gink . Guess what that lets me in for. To help combat this I have purchased System Mechanic 4 & I find this an excellent product for cleaning up all those Nasties. I have Run Quite a few Spy ware utilities & done tests as to who finds what & who removes what . It appears to me some of these Utilities specialise in certain areas , & that is why others keep finding stuff the others missed , ( if you follow my drift ) This is why I settled For what you recomended Plus System Mechanic 4
I use both Spybot and AdAware too. But I also use CWShredder. This program will search for specific programs that affect the browser. Even restores browser properties and cleans up orphans. The program has helped restore Internet connectivity to a few of my clients PC's.

Hi,
I am new to this world but I really preciated the answers. I think we all should stop using Microsoft producst one day, it really doesn't make sense to wasting time with Worms, spywares, malware since there is other OS can solve the problem itself.
Thank You,
O.Par
Many, many thanks to Michael for his sage advice! Only thing that I might add is: keep your drive clean as possible without too many downloads. Amen & thanks again.
