A word of caution about anti-spyware software:
make sure you check out the program's reputation before you use it, either in forums like this one, or look up reviews of the program by doing a google search and reading several of the reviews that you'll find in the results. The reason for this is that some supposedly anti-spyware software actually is or contains spyware!!!!
Be very wary of any programs or free on-line spyware checkers that you have never heard of and do not use anything until you find out what others have to say about it.
I use 2 Spybot and Ad Aware SE Personal this version of Ad Aware seems to detect more spyware, also I just started useing Firefox for a browser now I do not get any spyware.
I agree with what you suggest but with the addition of spywareblaster which spybot recomend in their program it immunises against a wide range of spyware and runs in tandem.
Hi Foggie
If you do not use IE then you won't need the immunization. They are there to protect you from self installing active x controls which does not happen in firefox.

Well thought out answer. I will be changing what I have been doing to your suggestion. Jerry
Great reply Michael F! How do I manage my DSL home page and move all my favorites onto mozilla? I haven't accessed mozilla yet, but I am thinking that it's more involved than "make this my homepage".
Thanks,
Bob A.
Hi Bob A
Not much harder as firefox when you first start it will import all your IE favorites and other items. If you miss it it can be started manually by going to File and then Import. For your home page just surf to the site you want to use and then go Tools and then Options. Then in the general tab select Use Current Page.
To open multiple tabs just type CTRL T or File and then New Tab. Multiple Tabs save all those unnecessary windows when you want to surf multiple sites.

In my opinion, you use whatever it takes to remove the pests. About a month ago I questioned if one needed to remove not only the pest but the extra registry entries it left behind.
As I see more and more pest and spyware damage, my opinion has now changed to "Wipe them all out".
As to what tools to use, such is discussed daily in the Security Forum and for my machine I remove anything tagged by Adaware, Spybot, Stinger, Housecall and ... www.pestscan.com
Guess what? I just don't experience the issues you see in the forums. Ever.
In closing, I also use Firefox and Mozilla so that is likely why I rarely find anything...
Bob
I agree, use whatever it takes to get the job done. I guess different Programs different programming leading to different results, miss a cookie here or there on one, pick it up with the other, Great! The tools I use, Adaware, Spybot my favorites but I know of other people that use these and more. Waste of time? I don't think so. I beleive the education of this problem is step one, and then whatever it takes to keep your system as you want it.
Guess what? I just don't experience the issues you see in the forums. Ever, Either. I guess it's because I run I.E, never had a problem, tried the others. I am Happy with my trouble free I.E. existance.
My wife runs an Imac running the latest operating system and Norton System Works 2004. She's already lost her system once and now her system seems infected again. (Cursor acts on its own deleting items, etc.)
I'm not a Mac-head and she's no techie. Can you reccommend any programs to help protect her system? Apple support has been useless, as was Virex.
Thanks for any direction.
Hi Ducker
There is a version of firefox for Mac OS. Never user Macs so can't give much more advice than that. Hope it helps

I use just one spyware program. I found Spyware X-terminator to be a better program than any of the others. It finds items that Spy Sweeper, SpyBot and Lavasoft do not. It also auto updates, so I never have to worry about the software not being updated. My system started running slow and is now back running great.
Can you have Firefox and another browser on your computer at the same time?
Ray Connors
Yes, absolutely. You can have any number of browsers, really. I have IE and (which I never use now that I have) Firefox, both on my desktop. One doesn't load over the other. They're both seperate programs, like Doom and Quake. I always use Firefox, but the IE shortcut still sits on the desktop one click away from spyware-hell just like it did back when I didn't have Mozilla Firefox. Also, I use AdAware and Spybot weekly. With blazing fast firefox the amount of aw/sw I remove has dropped to one or two per week from the 30 or 40 I had with IE. I had to use CWShredder once, but that was the only time.
