What about Safari? Surely that would be better than IE

Since you didn't mention any specifics about you and your friend's Macs, especially what version operating system you are using, the first question has to be, "What version OS are you using". Firefox only works with OS X, so users of OS 9.x and earlier simply can not use Firefox. If you are using some version of OS X, when you download the file, it arrives with a ".gz" extension. This is a compressed file and needs to be expanded. If double-clicking doesn't expand the file, try control-click (right-click w/2-button mouse) on the file and select open. If neither of these results in a new file with a ".dmg" extension, download the free "Stuffit Expander" at http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/index.html . That definitely will expand the file. The resulting ".dmg" file is a disk image. Double click the ".dmg" file and a new disk icon will appear after a few seconds. The Firefox app is in that virtual disk. Just drag Firefox from the virtual disk into your application folder, there is no installer program. That's all there is to it. The program should launch at that point when you double click it.

If after all this, Firefox still doesn't launch, then you have a problem with your system itself. Start by repairing permissions with Apple's "Disk Utility". Be careful when using that program, since you can totally erase your hard drive. Make sure to ONLY repair persmissions for your hard drive. If that doesn't allow Firefox to launch, you need to run some other disk maintenance program such as Norton Utilities, Disk Warrior or Tech Tool. Hopefully you don't need to go that far, but you should have at least one of those programs around to fix hard disk/system problems, two would be better.

Sorry about the 1st paragraph of my previous post. I hadn't scrolled down and seen that there were other posts, so hadn't seen the additional info you provided in your other posts. I wouldn't have bothered with the first paragraph if I had. You mention there was no file inside the library directory, there wouldn't be since no installer was used and Firefox itself has yet to run. Hopefully the solution is one of the other things I mentioned.

After having red this entire thread and seen that you a) cannot run Firefox on 10.2.8 and b) also cannot run Safari I would suggest that you either a) do a clean install and merge of your current OS or b) upgrade to Panther (10.3, which with updates is to 10.3.6 now) or c) wait for Tiger (10.4) to be released then upgrade to this.

If you cannot run Safari, you have a munged up OS that needs to be repaired. And I'm sorry, but Disk Utility is NOT gonna fix that! (And, btw, you CANNOT erase your hard drive with Disk Util if you are booted to your drive that contains the OS. the only way you can do this is if you boot from your OS installation CD/DVD or from an external source and run Disk Utility improperly. Yes, be careful but also listen to people that know what they are talking about!

Also, if you are going to the Firefox main oage using a Mac-based browser the page will DETECT that you are using a Mac and give you the CORRECT link to download the Mac version. (I have no idea where anyone alse got the idea that it was any different--people need to pay attention).

Firefox is up to version 1.0 now. It is officially no longer beta.so when you get your OS repaired, try that.

Thanks for the comeback!.......I will run Disk Utility or Norton and see what happens. I have 3 Macs with 10.2.8 and I have Firefox on 2 of them. This emac is just acting weird.

Well, it seems that you might have done something wrong so I went to Mozilla site and read this in faq page and saw this and not sure if this is what you talking about, " MacOS X
JRE 1.4.1 will not work with Firefox (Bug 197813). Applets will display using JRE 1.3.1.

Notes
You should not use Java with a spoofed useragent, as this may cause crashes (Bug 83376 - a JRE issue). You should also remove any Java plugin files from your Plugins directory when installing a new JRE release (if present)." So, there that I copy & paste it here so you know what you see what went wrong. So, if it's don't work then I might suggest you to uninstall it and re-install it again to see if it's works.

hope that helps.

Did you look at the Firefox file under Get Info and see if the permissions are so that you have access?

Re: Firefox DOES NOT WORK RIGHT ON MY MAC NEITHER

by hitsch - 11/19/04 9:37 AM In reply to: Firefox by donaldmullaney

firefox appears to be a hastily made copy of SAFARI that must be missing some major parts.

i tried it twice and i still haven’t had any luck it just keeps crashing.

i wanted to replace IE:MAC

mozilla has to do a lot of work to make firefox for mac more reliable and more stable.

at present it can't even compete with IE for mac. and that's bad.

As a Mac owner (10.3) why would you even want to run Firefox? Is this a keeping up with the Jones' things? Safari ROCKS! Seriously, I hope you can get it to work. Even though M$ has killed IE for Mac, it is still a good alternative. Try Opera or Netscape they both work with Mac. I tried the Windows version of FireFox and it sucks big time. Won't even think about putting it on my Mac.

I can't believe anybody (other than a M$ employee) would say that IE is a good alternative to anything. The only reason that IE has the market share that it does is that it was bundled w/ the OS. (Similarly for M$ Office, but I won't get into that here). I would rather browse w/o a gui than be stuck with IE. The only people that I have met that don't like Firefox are complaining that some pages don't render correctly in Firefox. That may be true, but it's not Firefox's fault. Firefox is designed to render pages that are written according to standards. Some pages are "optimized" for IE, which results in improper rendering in non-IE browsers. Try the current version of Firefox and let go of your pro-M$ bias. There are more capable / more affordable alternatives to just about anything that M$ has to offer. Tabbed browsing rocks!
