As CNET suggested in this mailing try Using Trend Micro P-cillin. I may use it myself when the renewal date for Norton comes around.

Amen! I've been using PC-Cillin for years now. Its great. Tried to express that a couple months ago but, got jumped on for my opinion. I have been given system works for Christmas in 2002 and 2003 and I couldn't give it away. With all my respect J.R., I'm glad your happy with it. Skip

Hi Skip,

There are several good Anti-Virus programs out there like PC-Cillin.

Hmmm....you couldn't give away a $70 Norton Systems Works?? You could have uninstalled the Norton Anti-Virus portion and kept the very good other features. You don't need to keep the disk for them to work. Re:http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=45196&messageID=544080

I hate live update. Why is it a seperate process? Next time I will send you my disk. Good luck but, I'll stay with my top rated Pc-cillin. Which was unknown when I started using it. It came with my first Motherboard disk. When I built my first computer. A AMD 350mhz K6 3D now processor. Can't remember the motherboard but, I gave it to my father inlaw and he is still using it today. Skip

I can understand your frustration. I unfortunately was able to get to symantecs site and do the upgrade.... the catch... for $50 I download the update that had a corrupted file in it. So doing what they said I uninstalled, turned off conflicting firewall and downloaded again... Quite a process by the time you get all the updates and all... Only to discover that I still have a corrupted file. To help me fix this they want to charge me and not only that I am only entitled to re-download the program for so long before it costs me another 6.95 to be able to download it again. B.S.!!!! They will not get my business again!!

I don't think it is that bad that Symantecs marketing or upgrading ability is not working.

I have NAV from 2002 Professional and the reg firewall,
Symantec has allowed me continued updates since then to
now almost 2005.

The Brand new NAV 2005 Suite of Firewall and AV is probably a complete rebuild hence instead of all the trouble verifying old versions. They just probably want you to make it to the store for some shiny new disks or buy them online.

For the price of Both the 2005 AV and the firewall and the piece of mind, it isn't that expensive.

Cheers,

MK

I've been dealing with Symantec for years too with the same complaints. I won't download anything from them and haven't for a long time. It rarely works and getting tech support is next to impossible.

Not sure if you are aware, but this entire company is owned by a man from India. And all the tech support is farmed out (outsourced) to India. When you finally do find a way through their web site maze to tech support, you often have to pay $2.99 a minute to talk to someone who barely speaks English and then cops an attitude when you can't understand him. On top of that, you get the joy of listening to this fellow flip through the manual pages while you can see the imagine of your phone bill matching the National debt.

I just got a reminder that my Internet Security was getting ready to expire. I ordered the new version in lieu of extending my subscription. When I ordere the product, it said it was in stock. They took my credit card info and then sent me an e-mail stating that it was not in stock. So I did find a way to call them and told them I had better get that upgrade in a quick hurry. He told me 7 days. I got it in three. But still. Why should I have to go through all this hassle every time I want to upgrade or extend my warranty?

To me if a product works I would rebuy it, not overly concerned who owns the company unless they are from a completely unethical country. Or the company is known to be damaging to the environment or treat workers badly etc.

Given the mighty task of software firewall and security companies and all the competition with hardware firewalls as well, I would still go with Norton.

If you don't download updates for your product right away you are letting hackers get the edge.

Plus if you don't download updates then maybe you are using a pirated copy or your connection isn't working properly.

In the near future the internet itself is going to be safeguarded more from threats rather than each machine connected. But for now considering the immense # of times I have been attacked by viruses Norton has kept me up and running bravo to them.

Although Symantec may have some recent off shore tech people in India (like Dell), I haven't been able to find out about it.

The largest in house stockholder I can find is Mr. Thompson, but he does not own the "entire company".
John W. Thompson is Chairman of the Board and CEO, joined Symantec in April 1999. He has 655,342 direct holdings of Symantec as of 10-25-04. In September 2002, President George W. Bush appointed Thompson to the National Infrastructure Advisory Committee (NIAC), to make recommendations regarding the security of the critical infrastructure of the United States. Read his and other company Bio's:

PS...I own no stock in Symantec or Nortons, or have any connection with them what-so-ever, and have never contacted/talked or even emailed anyone with them.

Symantech is NOT owned by anyone in India. It is an American Corporation, always has been. Symantec supported their products in-house until August 2002 when it was contracted to Stream, a call center outsourcing firm that opened an office in Oregon. In October 2004 they (Symantec) opted to move the support overseas. I know this because I was employed by Stream (and supported Symantec products) for the 2 years it was based in Oregon. I have personally listened to every complaint here and can tell you from EXPERIENCE that tech support is an extremely stressful job. Americans act like thier problems are life-or-death and can get VERY disrespectful on the phone.
Treat you computer like your car or your body, it needs maintenance on a regular basis. If you don't know how to perform proper maintenance, you have to PAY SOMEBODY to do it for you. If you don't know how to fix a problem yourself, you have to PAY SOMBODY to help you.
Try going to your mechanic or your doctor and telling them "I don't know whats wrong, but I'm sure not going to pay to have it fixed". See how far it gets you.

Symantec ~ Norton

by thefbi - 12/22/04 7:38 AM In reply to: Re: Rant about Symantec/Norton AV by chamar76

I have read numerous post on Symantec. This is their style. I have spent over 4 hours on the phone with them trying to get satisfaction. The website is a shell game to avoid answering complaints. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and urge all to do the same.
