Lydia,

>> thought I would Upgrade to NAV 2005; and so My question about uninstalling older Norton System Works 2002 is what I needed help with. that is, will it be removed completely if I do it from the ADD/REMOVE Control Panel, my OS is Windows 98 SE <<

I thought I would mention that in my recent upgrade from Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2002 to NIS 2005 on my Windows 98 (not SE) computer the install program deleted my old NIS (including NAV) before installing the new one. I did not have to do a separate remove. I do not know if this will hold true for NSW and NAV (standalone).

Hi Lydia -- I see you have lots of replies.

I have used NAV since approx 1999, and I have always uninstalled the old version first even when instructions said not necessary, including LU and Live Reg. I had no other Symantec products on my computer. As mentioned further in the thread, I, too, use Add/Remove to uninstall and do a search and also go into the Registry to remove leftovers.

October 01, I upgraded to NAV 2005 using a boxed version from Amazon which had a rebate. A week ago, I downloaded and purchased NPF 2005 from Symantec (also with rebate) because my ZAP firewall was not working well with NAV 2005 and I needed it in a hurry.

I now have two separate apps that integrate together but take up more space than one. I am in an exchange process with Symantec to replace both NAV and NPF with NIS 2005. NIS 2005 might be something you want to think about. The NIS 2005 costs about $10.00 more than the NAV -- with rebate on Symantec it is $39.95 plus cost and shipping, and you can do better elsewhere....for example...

http://www.atomicpark.com/productDetail.aspx?prodId=20061&refId=11&sk=82400 does not charge shipping and taxes.

I am more than pleased with the performance and compatibility of both 2005 versions of NAV and NPF. I am not familiar with NSW -- AOL does a great job with ad and popup blocking and spam so methinks I am covered.

About Norton Systems Works...

by John Robie - 11/15/04 3:34 PM In reply to: Re: Rant about Symantec/Norton AV by michhala

Hi Michala,

I see you have been using Norton Anti-Virus (NAV) since aprx. 1999, but you are not familiar with NSW (Norton System Works).

I'll try to explain here for you and others that may not be familiar, taken from my 2004 NSW. I haven't installed my 2005 version yet. The 2004 seems to be almost the same except the 2005 version supposedly blocks worms & removes viruses, worms, and Trojan Horses. The 2005 Premier edition also has a few more features like "Norton Ghost" for WinXP/2000Pro.

The 2004 Norton Systems Works (NSW) for use with WinXP Home, XP Pro/2000 Pro, WinMe, and Win98:

1. One Button Checkup. Can schedule & review repair history:
Windows Registry Scan
Program Integrity Scan
Virus Definitions Check
Auto-Protect Check
Last Virus Scan Check
Shortcut Scan
Web Cleanup Scan
If any errors found..can click on "View Details" then let it 'Fix' by clicking or ignore for the moment and go to "Find and Fix Problems" in the below Norton Utilities.

2. Norton Utilities

a. Optimize Performance. Speed Disk optimizes your PC's disk to improve performance. (Same as 'Defrag' but a little fasterl.)

b. Find and Fix Problems:
(1) Norton System Doctor. Continuously monitor your computer for problems.
(2) UnErase Wizard. Recover your erased files.
(3) Norton Disk Doctor (Like ScanDisk or in WinXP "Error-checking" the volume for errors):
Diagnose and repair problems with your disk. It performs several tests checking everything from the disk's partition tables to its physical surface. If Norton Disk Doctor finds a problem, it notifies you before making repairs. If you prefer, it can make the necessary repairs automatically.

Norton Disk Doctor lets you tailor the testing process to your own needs including what tests will be performed and how. After diagnosing a dish an easy-to-read report that lists the problems if found, the problems it fixed, and the area of the disk that checked out OK.

You select which drive and can check to fix errors. Has a "Startup Option"...can optically run when you start Windows with only the driver selected. Can enable (click) Free Space testing performing a surface check only on space which is not currently allocated. Can play music during disk diagnosis by selecting a MID, RMI or WAV file to play.

(4) Norton WinDoctor. Check for Windows Problems. Is safe and easy to diagnose and repair the most common types of Windows problems. Can identify & fix with the Windows registry, system files, and software applications. It checks for problems such as lost shortcuts, invalid registry entries, broken applications, and missing dlls. When it finds problems, it presents them in a easy-to-read report and lets you select which ones you wan fixed. Normally recommends a solution for a fix, but will also let you go into the registry for a manual fix (I never do this). You can choose which test to run and view Repair History and (optionally) undo changes.

3. Norton AntiVirus (same as the 2004 NAV Program):

System Status. Shows if Security Scanning Features are on like :

Auto-Protect
Email Scanning
Script Blocking
Note of last Full System Scan
Date of last obtained Virus Definitions
Subscription Renewal Date (when it runs out)
If Automatic Live Update is ON

Scan for Viruses....Task
Scan my computer
Scan all removable drive
Scan all floppy disks
Scan drives
Scan folders
Scan files
Can set up a Scheduled Task.
Can save scan so you can repeat it later.

Reports:
Review on Quarantined Items
Online Virus Encyclopedia connection
Activity Log

5. Norton Clean Sweep;

a. CleanUP:

(1) Uninstall Wizard. Uninstall programs you no longer need.
(2) Fast & Safe Cleanup. Quickly removes unnecessary files to free up disk space.

b. Internet:

(1) Internet Uninstall. Uninstall programs downloaded from the Internet.
(2) Internet Cache Cleanup. Instantly remove unneeded Internet buildup.
(3) Cookie Cleanup. Safely remove.
(4) Web Browser Plug-Ins
(5) ActiveX Cleanup. View and remove unwanted ActiveX controls.
There is a "Safety Sweep" indicator that comes on when using the Plug-in cleaning and ActiveX cleanup. Clicking 'Options' will explain the ON & Off features and the color indicators of Green, Yellow, and Red....

c. Programs:

(1) Backup Wizard. Create a backup of a program for extra security.
(2) Restore Wizard. Restore files and programs Clean Sweep has backed up.

6. Web Tools:

Web Cleanup. Fast elimination of unwanted files that accumulate on your computer whenever you use your Web Browser, such as URL History, Cookies, Cached Files. Can view, select, save, or delete items individually, by clicking Advanced Cleanup. An add Web site names, and indicate which items to keep.

Has a "Connect Keep Alive" page for settings on (I think) keeping a ISP from closing down your internet connection by "simulating network activity" ....you set number of minutes, and "Disable when inactive for more than"...you set number of minutes.

7. Extra Feature. Symantec Security Check. Text your exposure to online security & virus threats.

8. Norton GoBack - Personal Edition. (Similar to WinXP and WinME System Restore).
As far as I can determine GoBack restores more than System Restore.

John -- did not see your reply re ...sorry to be late

by michhala - 11/21/04 2:05 PM In reply to: About Norton Systems Works... by John Robie

John -- Sometimes I used to listen to our local computer radio show on ABC in Los Angeles. These fellows always said very negative things about Norton System Works.....there was negativity about the software some years back and that spoiled it for me. I have always had good luck with NAV, however.

I do not like programs that do too many things. I decided on NIS 2005 (which has not arrived yet) only because I knew we (my PC and me) liked the NAV 2005 and NPF 2005 (installed after NAV to replace ZAP) -- but two individual programs take up too much space. I have plenty of room but think it a waste of HD space to keep two separate programs using 45MB, when I am told NIS uses about 22-24MB. I intend to disable the NIS spam and popup blockers because AOL/DSL does a good job.

I appreciate your taking the time to send me the information and apologize that it took so long to reply.

Miki

Hi Miki,

Know what you mean about HD space. I have a 100GB HD on my WinXP desktop and only 22GB free left. I have not had any experience with NIS or NPF. I do use the free Zone Alarm firewall on my three desktop computers, disabling the SP2 firewall on my WinXP.

JR

When things settle after the Holidays, I will get to installing XP SP2. As I have previously mentioned, there is a Microsoft KB about SP2 and AOL. It is a definite that I must disable the XP SP2 firewall.

My wish for you is to have no disruptive conflicts with ZA and NAV 2005 after install. If ZA and NAV 2005 conflict, you need to disable the worm protection; otherwise they are both trying to do the same thing. After I installed NIS 2005, all those tasks were taken out of the NAV 2005 and integrated into the NIS.

Thanks for the info. It will be in June before I install my NSW 2005 (with NAV) as that is when my subscription runs out on my current 2004.

I know nothing about AOL, except that my sister-in-law with AOL keeps sending me FWD (Forward) jokes that come in to non-AOL users like me, as a email attachment. I do not open email attachments especially would never open a strange 'forward' attachment. This has been going on for years and no one can explain why AOL does not make it as an attachment to other AOL users, but only to non-AOL users.

JR
PS. My stack of AOL CD's they mailed to me wanting me to get so many hours/days of their service 'free' is now 6 inches high. I'll cut them up and use for X-Mass decorations on bushes outside or to scare the birds out of my fig trees. ;-)

Re: John -- did not see your reply re ...sorry to be late

by michhala - 11/21/04 9:53 PM In reply to: Re: John -- did not see your reply re ...sorry to be late by John Robie

John -- Now, now -- must not make fun of AOL :) I have a large non-AOL mailing list. When good joke forwards are received, I copy/paste into a new E-mail and send. Some people often send joke forwards which display all the Internet details and E-mail addresses of everyone, rather than blind copies. I insert pictures and schedules into my E-mails and that is how they are received. The only time I send attachments is when I have a .doc that needs to be in its original form, multiple files, movie clips, or music tracks. Back in 1998 and with old, old, old AOL versions what you mentioned used to happen as far as sending attachments. Way back then in the old days :), if I embedded a photo in an E-mail it would arrive to a non-AOL subscriber as an attachment. AOL uses the same IE 6.0 as everyone else. After I sign on to AOL, I often use the external IE 6.0 at desktop. I have the best of both worlds ;)

Although I don't use the AOL services much, they have a wonderful Calendar and reminder process. Their popup blocker is great; they handle spam and viruses in E-mails well. In addition, I have a DSL from them that is not connected online when computer is on and at Windows desktop. It connects only after I login and sign on to AOL. I am only vulnerable to the beasts looking to get in when signed online with AOL, but when signed off and working offline and computer is on, there is no connection to the Internet.

My proof, other than what AOL told me -- no automatic updates come in unless I am signed on to AOL. Symantec's NetDetect only searches for updates when I sign on to AOL. The firewall has no activities in any of the logs for the times when I am signed off and at Windows desktop. Their log activities are only for the times I am online. This kind of DSL is called "instant on". I could configure for it to connect as soon as computer is on, but I feel safer this way.....and it only takes 3 seconds for me to connect.

So this post is not completely off-topic, AOL has just come out with their new 9.0 Security Edition that provides more firewall, more AV, a new spyware program. Etc.......all of which I will never use.

That's all folks......

Miki

Thanks Miki,

Perhaps my sister-in-law has received notification of AOL 9.0 by now, if not your news will be sent to her. Almost all her friends on the Net are on AOL and she just doesn't seem to care about 'copy/paste' or using "blind CC" (Bcc) letting everyone's email addy show. She rarely uses IE, and in fact when I visited a year ago, I had to install the MS updates...she could care less. They have had their PC (Win98) in the shop several times...probably for virus/spyware. I've tried to help, but it is ignored. Well, some months ago she said a large cloud of smoke arose out of the PC like an A-Bomb...probably from no maintenance. :-)

She gave me their Credit Card number/info and asked me to buy them another computer. The monitor was the only thing saved. I ordered one on the Net with Dell, and had one sent that is a Pent4, WinXP, with power, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD, and good AGP Graphic (video) card. Her hubby likes gaming only. They are happy with it, but lordy, lordy, it will probably end up the same as the other. I've tried to discuss AVG, Ad-Aware, SpyBot with her since I believe the free NAV has expired, but she just doesn't seem to acknowledge. I'll probable be buying them another PC before long if their credit holds out. ;-)

In the mean time I still get all her AOL "Fwd" stuff as an attachment. It was the same way with two other of my out of state friends. They finally dropped AOL and I now get their 'Fwd' without being attachments or copy/paste.

John

John
I have the same problem with friends that use AOL. They refuse to copy and paste so I just delete the e-mail now LOL. They also never include what my last reply was to them in THEIR reply so, unless we are playing e-mail tag at the moment, I always have to look at my sent mail to see what I said unless I've already deleted it. LOL The worst one is a very good friend that is under the impression that because she has AOL, she no longer has a need to do Windows Updates, Virus protection, Spyware protection, etc. She ALSO thinks that AOL does scan, defrag, etc for her. All she does is turn on the computer, sign on to AOL and she is conviced that everything is done for her. LOL I gave up trying to convince her differently about 4 years ago. Needless to say, she buys a new computer once a year because her computers spend more time in the shop than out of it. LOL.
PS, Miki this is not a knock to you or AOL, I just wish that others would use it the same way that YOU do.

Yep Roddy, I delete all her 'Fwd' email.
This has been going on for years....I can't figure out why AOL doesn't fix it....unless they are just being 'difficult/mean' against MS and non users of AOL. :-)

Hi,

You didn't mention your OS so I will post two links for you.

This one covers Manually uninstalling NAV 2002 from Win 98/ME

This one covers Manually uninstalling NAV 2002 fron NT/2K/XP

Read the one that is appropriate to your Operating System and you should have no trouble. MOST who uninstall using Add/Remove have no problem but there are the exceptions so I suggest rezding the links.

Hope this helps answer your question.
