Never owned a handheld...

by planty - 8/25/04 9:58 PM

I've been out travelling around Asia for the last few years and have built up quite a stash of digital pics. Problem is some of the places i visit dont have computers so i cant upload pics and clear my cards.

Was thinking of buying a laptop but they are too big and it'd just get robbed, hence a handheld!

Do handhelds have any kind of hard-drive memory or are they all cards? Can you view pics on a handheld ok (I wouldn't be editing them)? Can I send big files over the net easily? I would also use it to check email, make memos, keep an address book and for a calendar. Can this be done and what products should i be looking at?

Sorry for such a lengthy post, thanks for your time/feedback.

I think most store them in memory. How many depends on how big the image file is. If it's a thumbnail, they'll probably hold quite a few.

Thanks for the rapid response Kiddpeat.

With this being the case then, theres no reason for me to purchase a handheld? If all the data is kept on CF cards, i'd be as well buying more CF cards for my camera and just riding it out til i find a computer to upload them to the net?

And as for the address/memo/calendar keep to the mighty pen!

PDA (at least in the US) does not have a hard drive, so when the battery is dead, the data is gone. My best suggestion is to get an iPod and a card reader for it, so you can transfer your pictures onto it. Recent iPod models offers color screen and photo viewing. They go for 20GB and higher, which should be very roomy for photographers.

If you have the money, also get a big CF card, about 1GB at least, reduce the amount of times you have to worry about free space

Battery dead doesn't mean data gone (cont.)

Some of the newer Palms finally use flash memory to save your data so that even when the battery is all gone, your data remains. One hopes that such a feature continues to show up in new models.
