98SE Install

by egcomp - 11/19/03 8:46 AM

Computer is running 98 but "buggy" I tried to load win 98se but it would not allow me. I can not find where I can uninstall w98. Is it possible to reformat hard drive or get rid of w98 so that I can perform "clean" install?

Not only possible, but the recommended way to reinstall Windows 98 if that's the only way to solve the problems.

Two notes however:
The old forum had a lot of posts with detailed instructions for doing this. They've disappeared. Post again if you feel you might need them. Somebody might feel inclined to write or copy or link to a long and helpful text.
Are you sure this is the best way to solve your problems? Did you do a parasite scan (virusses, spyware)? This, depending on the cause, occasionally helps very well. There might also be other causes, maybe even hardware-related.

Anyway, good luck.

Sounds like you are talking about the "Error SUxxxx" messages that came up while installing Windows 98se when there is already a Windows 98 exist on the hard drive.

If you are using Windows 98SE "For PC Without Windows" (OEM, Full Version), you can remedy this problem by wiping out the hard drive completely by formatting it (if you haven't done so, backing up to a second HD or CD-RW is a good idea.). If it just Windows 98SE upgrade version then there not much I can do for that.

Instructions to perform a clean install of Windoes 98SE

1. Using a Windows 98 boot disk and Win98se cd-rom, turn on the computer and choose "Boot Windows using CD-ROM support"
2. Then, press Shift+F5 to go to Command Prompt
3. type "Format C:" (without quotation marks), you get a warning asking if you really sure to format the hard drive and press Y
4. Formatting the hard drive takes a while if it is a large hard drive, sometime between 30 minutes to an hour before it's done.
5. when asked to leave a label for the hard drive, I usually press "enter" to skip that.
6. Your hard drive is ready to accept Windows 98se installation, go ahead to reboot the computer and begin Windows 98SE setup.
