Put disk in drive and it will not read. Looked at the properties and it has disappeared. Can someone please help me. The light appears as if it reads it but I get the following error message: "Drive D does not exist". How can fix this???? HELP!!!
I had this problem awhile ago on my Dell. If you uninstall the drive completely (in the device manager under my computer, it should still be listed in there) and then reboot it should recognize it, re-install it and it will work.
Okay talk about weird. I tried to reply to this email and guess what my D drive appeared. Then something happened and I had to shut my system down and when it restarted now my D drive is gone again. There is no D or CD rom in the Device Manager. How can I put it back or can I put it back.
That you may have a failing CDRW/DVD drive or other issues such as heat.
Your post is void of any long story about the machine, the OS, motherboard drivers, BIOS version and more.
Keep rebooting...?
Bob
How do I go about finding info about the machine, the OS, motherboard drivers, BIOS version and more. I do know the OS is ME/Northgate computer
We have:
OS> Windows ME.
Machine> Some Northgate.
You can look up BELARC FREE ADVISOR if you wish, but all the non-custom Northgate's I encounted had a model number.

Bob, I think I found the problem. The Disk that I put in is a DVD-ROM. Once I put in another CD the D drive came back. But, once I put in that DVD-ROM disk the drive is like in hidding. By the way, I believe the Model number is LP03900215.
this is a compaq lap top and the drive want open and the computer don't reconize it
does device manager have a code under the cdrom. For instance a (CODE 39)?
Tyler
Thanks for the advice. But, I think I figured it out. My system wont play DVD-ROM but it will play CD-ROM. Guess I need to upgrade or purchase a system than can do both any suggestions?
Is so then you simply need software, a codec to read the DVD's.
If not, such drives are rather inexpensive. Even the DVD burners aren't very high priced.
No, its just a CD-ROM reader. How can I make it a burner or DVD Reader. Where would be the best place to obtain what I would need. Can I have a CD-ROM reader and a DVD Burner.
it with a combo or DVD Burner. DVD burners do read and burn CD-R's, RW's, DVD's.
The latest DVD burners also burn the new dual layer DVD's. If you make the plunge, maybe go all the way. The dual DVD's cost a bundle, but they will eventually come down. Meantime you can use the other read and burn functions.
I buy at http://www.newegg.com Go there to look at what is available. I think that they have a dual layer burner by Lite-On for around $70.00.
You probably need to replace the CD-ROM
In a sense your right. But I may just have to upgrade. My system wont play DVD-ROM but it will play CD-ROM. Thanks for the advice.
