there are many e-mails i am receiving from cheap oem software sites. can i get a site recommended from any member who has dealt with and bought from one. i am willing to buy, however,i am kind of apprehensive !
Buy.com is a reputable online shopping center and they partner with several OEM resellers (though they don't sell it themselves). Go http://www.buy.com. Look up a software item, and in addition to their own prices on the products, they may list (especially for products from that company in Redmond) some links they sponsor to companies that will sell OEM versions. Now, they won't have WinXP Pro for $10, it will be more around $90.
Regarding my previous post. You were looking for someone who had bought from one of them--I have not. I've only browsed their sites--I would trust them though because I trust Buy.com who made the referral.
I need to put the software from an OEM on 2 PCs I own - will OEM do this?
Read the license agreement to determine how a particular OEM copy of software may be used. The general rule is that it it is ILLEGAL to install OEM software on more than one computer. It is usually the same for RETAIL versions, with the one difference being that retail versions may be installed on another computer after it is removed from the first.
On top of the illegality, many OEM versions versions of software (like Windows XP) can only be used with one particular hardware profile. You try to install it in a second computer with a different motherboard and CPU, and you will not able to activate it. The same holds for making upgrades to the original computer--make too many changes and you will need to purchase a new software license.

Doesn't really help the rest of us if you don't tell us which company it was and where you got the CDs from now does it! And truly, I can probably survive no free calls to India - not even friends I'm talking to.
Most of the OEM or DSP software that is for sale on online shops are legal, although you really have to make sure that they are. Some shops will sell the item only if you buy with hardware, others will tell you that it is your responsibility to comply with the law and buy the hardware.
As a New & Used computer dealer in Richmond VA, I run into this question ALL the time. OEM software is usually offered to legit business owners at a discount. With the economy the way it is now, everyone is trying to make a fast buck!
"With genuine Windows® software acquired with a new PC, you can be confident that you're receiving the most cost-effective, fully supported, and reliable software available—that will work just as hard as you do." states Microsoft, but when in doubt if the dealer should be selling this software as Microsoft if they are legit...
There are three ways.
Method 1: Email piracy@microsoft.com
Method 2: Call the Microsoft Anti-Piracy Hotline at
(800) RU-LEGIT.
Method 3: Go to the following web page to fill out an online reporting form: http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/Reporting.mspx
As for HP, I must say that was really under-handed by printing it on the box, but do understand, "applications" are not what makes a computer function/work it is the "operating system" or "system software" that include all the programs that allow the computer to function.
Appication are sometimes the main reason people buy the computers, but I would almost bet on the fact the HP covered themselves in fine print on that one.
?Buyer Beware?
I hope this helps.

The other day I was on a well known site for computer everything. I clicked on O/S and I found places where you could buy just the Lic. The way they put it was if you had the O/S and wanted to install it again here was the Lic.
You don't need drivers to run cdrom, cdrw or dvd. Fire in the machine and use it.
According to this article which I found on softwareoutlet.com, oem sotware are legal to be sold.

The software from Europe if you ever get it will not be authentic especially Mirosoft products. Have know several people who would not listen and bought these (ie Xp) and
when they had to reactivate or install SP2 etc found out the hard way Do your homework and purchase from reputable businesses Newegg and the like
I bought a computer and Microsoft Office software from NewEgg. The computer didn't work and only after much wrangling did NewEgg take it back. I bought a replacement computer from Dell and when I openend the Office software package there was nothing in it- just a product key to activate the software which had been installed on the defective computer, now long gone.
NewEgg will not refund my money. I know, I know: you've not had any problems with NewEgg. But stop and think what will happen when you do- and you will.
I use Open Office. Can't justify "Office!"
