There are two answers to your question Santiago. Yes and No (as you might have expected!) While it's true that because of the relatively small numbers of Mac users vs Windows users, the nut cases who write the viruses won't get the attention they so desperately need by writing viruses for the Mac environment. Plus the Unix underpinning of OSX are pretty solid anyway. So on the one hand, you might be able to get away without having a virus detection program from a system standpoint.

Now your data files, that's a whole different kettle of fish. The worst viruses I ever had to deal with as a Mac tech were the Trojan Horses that hit MS Word documents and jpg graphic files. Since the largest uses for Macintosh computers are still in the graphics areas, the virus that affected jpg graphic files was a real nightmare for a while. The Trojan Horse would change the structure of the file, making it virtually unusable, yet the computer itself was unaffected. The problem that affected the Word documents wasn't specifically aimed at the Macs themselves, but because Office on both sides of the fence share documents, it hit it pretty bad as well. Once the virus definitons caught up to them, we were able to recover the files. Of course, we did loose some in the process (which was the biggest single reason for starting an off-network archiving system!)

So, if for no other reason then piece of mind, I'd say you should have a virus detection and removal program. A good one like Norton Anti-Virus that runs in the background is a great place to start. I know Apple is really big on Virex but I'm not too keen on it. Just my opinion though.

As someone much wiser then I once said, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Get your ounce of prevention in a virus detection and removal program, get the monthly updates, do regular back ups and you should be good to go!

Phil

No. I was one of the first Mac owners in Canada, back when we had to run the OS on a floppy along with the program. Think about it! Anyway, I got a hard drive (it was called a "backpack", and I don't remeber who built it). About six months after getting the backpack, I got a virus. On a floppy I borrowed from a friend. A game. It destroyed everything. I re-formatted my hard drive and got a primitive anti-virus program. This all happened over twenty three years ago. My oldest daughter was three when I got the machine. She's now twenty seven, and her oldest daughter is three. And today I read this question. Spooky, 'specially at Halloween!

Back to basics: No, no, no, no. Don't run a Mc without an anti-virus program, even if you don't ever use it on the net. Don't do it. Please.

While you are less vulnerable than a windows pc, there are still dangers there and if you get hit, it could be devastating...

In general Mac's are a lot more stable than PC's.
This can be attributed to the way the linux based kernal handles commands and also to the fact that virus writers usually focus thier attention on the PC/windows market...

Recently there were some scares because of the openness of the operating system architecture but many are addressed quickly by doing regular mac updates.

For most people the need for a virus app is minimal, however if you are doing alot of internet surfing and downloading files, especially illegal stuff from P2P networks like kazaa you always have to be careful.

Yes you can, but will it bother you knowing that you are not adequately protected. Chances are very small that you will get a virus, however it is better to be safe than sorry. I switched back to mac after too many virus, worm and hijack software under the Windows faulty umbrella. It has been over a year that I have been running Netblockade, which has basically been idle since virus's on Macs are virtually non-existant

There are dozens of such posts all over the Cnet forums.

Get some protection and don't think that an OS will save you everytime.
