If you were on a desert island with only one type of digital entertainment, which would you choose?
- Computer with an Internet connection
- HDTV with satellite service
A few questions to start the discussion off:
Do you perceive the computer today as tool rather than entertainment piece? If so, why?
If you had another choice in the poll, what digital entertainment item would you add?
Do you spend more time watching TV than on the computer? Or the opposite?
Have fun with this poll and discuss!
Thanks and best regards,
-Lee
I'll take a computer and internet connection if I am stranded on a desert island. I can work, watch movies, get news, talk, and order what I need on my computer. TV is passe at our house.
Were we stranded or are we there just to get away? If I was stranded on a deserted island I wouldn't want either until I was settled in for a long stay. Priorities first (food and shelter) then the computer with the net.
I choose computer with an internet connection, because through this medium I am the driver to go destinations of my choice, while the HDTV with satellite service provides their program and you receive whatever they happen to supply; you have a choice of flipping the channel in case you are not in tune with their program. The computer takes you where you chose to go, and naturally you would interact and enjoy as you expect in most of the time. HDTV may evolve to like a computer, but it's only on the way and not yet. So, for now the computer is for me. ss
I am not sure how an internet connection would work on an island with only... so I chose the satelite connection, for how else could you commuicate?
Computer, First order of business, email for help and get me off this island.
Where are you???
With the internet you have access to maps and star charts...how to build a fire, shelter, find food and water, comunicate with others.
Sounds like this would make good reality television.
Some of the previous respondees are assuming that we are stranded on the desert island ("LOST"?). If that is the case, as one person already mentioned, I'd email and IM for help as soon as I got the blessed thing turned on. HDTV/satellite service doesn't provide a way to communicate.
The internet connection was not defined as broadband, assuming it is, then one could use it as an entertainment medium and HDTV would again become a non-option.
You guys are missing the point of the exercise. This is a rhetorical question about which device you would prefer for ENTERTAINMENT, not for communicating or researching, etc.
c'mon... look where you're asking the question >> ONLINE! If the respondents were more interested in HDTV, they wouldn't be replying to the poll and leaving messages on the forum - they'd be watching a ball game! :oD No wonder 99% of the poll respondents chose computer. Your discussion questions are really moot with THIS crowd. If you could broadcast it over HDTV, that group would have 99% on their side.
PS-I would choose my computer and internet over my boyfriend if I were forced to choose... :o)
IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A DESERT ISLAND, WHERE WOULD YOU PLUG IN EITHER ONE? ![]()
I didn't know there were islands in a desert.
Anyway, the computer with internet would be my choice since I could e-mail for help when I was ready to rejoin civilization. But I'd really enjoy the solitude for a while.
Would there be sharks circling the island? In the desert???
