I am getting the famous "cannot find server or dns error" on several websites since installing NIS pro 2004. The problem is once I get that error after trying to enter those specific sites it completely
locks me off the internet and I will get that error no matter what site I try to enter afterwards so I have to reboot. As long as I do not try to enter those sites, I do not have a problem. They are http://www.kait8.com/ http://www.wmctv.com/ and http://www.wreg.com/
The strange thing is they are all three tv sites and using the same webhost. I can access them when I turn off my firewall. This is happening to two computers. Both running WinXP, both 1 gig ram, both have approx 40 gig hd space free. Both had Nortons firewall 2003
before upgrading. I have cable access and a wireless router. The desktop is wired and the laptop is wireless. The desktop was upgraded, the laptop was a clean install. I have the exact same problem with both computers.
One other thing I noticed since installing NIS pro 2004, concerning the icons at the bottom by the clock that shows what running in the background. They do not always appear after a reboot. Including the ones for NIS. It leaves me feeling that I have an unsafe connection even though all is running properly.
Any suggestions will be welcomed.
Dan
You may find this annoying but installing such software does block web sites and cause such issues. You'll have to ask yourself how to adjust this firewall to be off when surfing those sites.
The icons in the tray can exist or not exist in XP or even other OS's. This is something that may be a feature or bug.
Bottomline: This software has its own support site. Are you using it?
Bob
1. I have been to the support site. They only answer questions they know the answer to. I spent several hours there. They do not provide a real person unless you pay for it.
2. The icons in the tray is inconsistant as to whether or not they are going to show.
3. As far as adjusting the firewall, there is another problem since trying to go to the sites is knocking me completely offline.
4. If you are not going to read the whole question and answer the questions with real answers please save space by not replying. You are wasting my time and yours.

Many feel that way. The problem isn't worth fixing.

The program has bugs. Have you considered asking for a refund?

Answer to number 2 and another sign this software may not be ready for the public. You can find similar frustrated people in the Security Forum. Do voice your concerns there as well.

You wasted your own time with this product. The real answer is simple. The software has some issues and you can't accept that.
Can you?
Bob
The software may have issues and may have been released too early but before asking for a refund (56 days left), I trying to find out if anyone can help. There may be a simple answer or there may be no answer but I will not know if I don't ask around.
My question to you, how do you know it has bugs, how do you know the software was released too early. Yes alot of peoples been asking for help in this and other forums but as usual, nobody is going to ask for help if they are not having any problem - silent majority. Give me a link from some accredited testing site.
Give me something besides it is issues. If I feel your source has credibility then I will immediately ask for a refund otherwise I will wait a week or two trying to get it fixed. I did not see anything in zdnet news or cnet news about it having problems. Give me a link...
What more is needed other than the product doesn't work for you?
Simple answer? Toss it out, keep the AV and use another firewall that works for you. The Security Forum and those who visit there have favorites. NIS is not on the list. See you in the Security Forum.
Bob
Why toss something out if I possibly have some setting messed up somewheres? That is why I came to this forum, hoping for some guidance and some help from someone who might have the answer I need. If nobody can help fine, but I do not need help from individuals that don't even try to answer the question but will post garbage.
This is my last reponse to you so say whatever you want.
Look at the links. The reviews are in and you are in denial that it could be a work of art and not something you want on your PC.
Your friend,
Bob
Version 2003 was not stellar:

That's a lot of unhappy. 63%Thumbs Up 37%Thumbs Down.
Version 2004's first words at http://reviews.cnet.com/Norton_AntiSpam_2004/4505-3514_7-30524437-5.html were:
"Norton's lackluster support"
The 2004 user reviews at http://reviews.cnet.com/Norton_Internet_Security_2004_PRO/4852-3514_7-30524435.html are not looking good.
"14%Thumbs Up 86%Thumbs Down"
Seems you should add your comments?
Bob
I would not know if you checked in with Symantec's support unless you posted such. Its their product and if they won't support it, then maybe that is the sign that they don't want your money?
This all seems quite unfriendly to lash out at others over the misdeeds of Symantec. I truly feel for you, but take your ire out on the company that put you at such unease. Got it?
Your post left out some other details, which could make a small diff such as the OS. XP for instance hides icons in the tray. I think I noted that. I don't mind you leave out such details, but YOU are part of the solution to the issues. If you vent too much on people then they won't help you.
Bob
Think you are looking in the wrong area.
I do not use the Pro version-just the ordinary version.
But recently I had a problem where I could not get into a group of sites that are all connected similiar to what you describe on the same webhost and was getting the same message as you.
Any other sites I could log into.
As I assist by giving answers in this group I knew the webmaster and emailed him. He got me to try a few things and then said it is a problem with your ISP.
I got in touch with my cable internet supplier and 90 minutes later I was able to access those sites. The cause was at the ISP end and not my end.
This is not telling you what the cause is as I do not know. But my ISP was able to fix it.
Thanks -- you gave me another direction to look for an answer. After I first read your message I went to the host website and found I am unable to access any of their sites without knocking me offline causing me to reboot.
