Serious ASUS P4BGL-MX Problems

Sorry about the long post but for two weeks, I've been trying to solve problems with my Vision workstation that came installed with an ASUS motherboard running Windows 2000 which I upgraded to XP Pro. In order to prepare for auto installation of SP2, I installed updated versions of Intel accelerator, Intel graphics driver and Intel Installation Utility.

Now, my computer crashes repeatedly, especially if I try to run defrag, whether in safe mode or normal. Since I turned off the restart function, I get a blue screen error that references my Intel storage driver.

My computer is halting and slower than an old 486. I've tried to updating my BIOS, which is ver. 1002 (the latest for this motherboard is 1009) but I keep getting error messages when I try to do this in EZ Flash from a floppy in DOS.

I stopped the auto update of SP2 for the time being and have ordered it on a disk but I know there are some SP2 files on my computer because I saw them when I was able to download some security updates from Windows update (which I did manually) and my computer had problems with locating the SP2 file, "control.man" file and instead gave me an error message. I tried searching for the files on the "C" drive's windows\i386\ServicePack folder and couldn't locate the file.

I downloaded KB839645 (which contains control.man) using another computer I (blessedly) have and installed it--except the file wouldn't install on my C drive but only on my H drive which is an external Iomega HDD I have attached to my computer. That's where I found the SP2 files that had downloaded in July. I believe the preliminary downloads and some that occurred late last month which downloaded additional SP2 files to my workstation, have caused these problems. Moreover, my computer now doesn't automatically find and recognize the C drive!

This brings me to my next issue. I need to merge partitions I started creating using PartitionMagic 8.0 but finished creating using Windows XP (since I have an NTFS system), about a year ago when I was going to try to install another version of Windows and Linux. I installed neither (in part because of the NTFS system issue) so before installing SP2, I want to merge the partitioned drives so there is one C drive.

I have just over 3 MGs of space left on the C drive but have a small "D" partititon which I can't access and contains no files and a large "F" partitition (where the KB839645 file ultimately downloaded itself) with over 50 MGs of blank space on it and a number of other files.

All that said, I'd like some advice. Will I need to reinstall Windows entirely? Thanks.
